Things to do in Madeira, Portugal (save and share this post): I spent 6 amazing days in Madeira, Portugal and it is by far my most favorite European destination. The island has such a diverse landscape and the weather is mild year round. Here’s my itinerary! Day 1: Pool day at my hotel (NEXT Hotel) for most of the day and then I went running up the crazy hills of Madeira to see Funchal by foot. Day 2: I explored the NW part of the island visiting Seixal Beach, Ponto Moniz, Fanal Forest and Ilheus da Ribeira da Janela. Day 3: I went on a sidecar adventure where I explored Valley of the Nuns, the Cabo Girão Skywalk, and the fishing town of São Pedro. I booked this on Airbnb experiences and will link it in my Madeira stories, it was an amazing tour. Day 4: Whale and dolphin watching tour but we only saw dolphins. In the evening I did an Airbnb Experience at a locals farm house where he cooked a great dinner where 90% of the items were picked directly from his gardens that day. He also taught us how to make poncha, a favorite local drink. Day 5: I toured the SE part of the island visiting Ponta do Garajau, Monte Palace, and ended the day at the most beautiful views from Pico do Arieiro (the videos of me on the clouds). Day 6: I watched the sunrise from Miradouro Ponto do Rosto and then did an 8 mile hike of Levado do Caldeirão Verde. After the hike I relaxed at the pool! If you want photos taken in Madeira I recommend @robframing. Madeira was everything and I don’t see it dropping out of my top 5 international destinations anytime soon. Have you been to Madeira? Don’t miss these places in the NW of Madeira… 🏝️😍🇵🇹 If you’re coming to Madeira I definitely recommend a jeep tour around the North East of the island, we booked ours with @getyourguide, thanks to their cancellation policy we were even able to move the day we’d originally booked to a sunnier one ☀️ We got to visit some of the top places in Madeira like Seixal beach, Fanal Forest and Porto Moniz, as well as the Cabo Girão Skywalk, Sao Vicente and Ponta do Sol. It houses about 100,000 species of plants from the five continents: African cycads, North American sequoias, South African proteas, Belgian azaleas, Himalayan orchids, local olives and the rare and endemic lauresil of Madeira, World Heritage. The endemic flora includes the metasequoias and the iconic laurel trees. Two Japanese and Chinese-inspired corners, decorated with pagodas, lanterns, Buddhas, bridges and fountains surrounded by Koi fish. Valuable collection of tile panels from the 15th to the 20th century, showing Portuguese religious, historical and cultural scenes - one of the richest in the country. The “Monte Palace Museum” has contemporary African art furniture and sculptures (“African Passion”), with over 1,000 pieces from Zimbabwe, and the “Secrets of Mother Nature” exhibition, which includes 700 samples of prestigious minerals and gemstones (diamonds, crystals, etc.). We visited on a Sunday just after 11am—unfortunately, so did everyone else! There was a queue, but to be fair, it moved quite quickly. I’d already bought our cable car tickets online (they’re valid for 180 days and cost about €20 for a round trip), so we just joined the line. They take a photo of you before you get on, which felt a bit awkward, but never mind. The cable car ride up is really beautiful and we enjoyed the whole experience. Once you reach the top though, it’s understandably busy—especially on a weekend. This was in May, so not even peak season; I can only imagine what it’s like in summer. True to form, I managed to walk in the opposite direction to the crowds. We turned right and then left toward the church, which was peaceful with lovely views and a donation box inside. Then we made our way to the gardens. There's only one proper entrance—even though there’s a kiosk on the side, it looked more like an exit. Entry to the gardens was €15, and the place is surprisingly vast. There are a couple of buildings housing contemporary art, which weren’t really for me—we gave them a try, but I just didn’t get it. The Japanese gardens were beautiful, but absolutely swarmed with people taking photos on the stepping stones. It was a bit much, so we decided to move on and circle back later. The grounds have some lovely water features, statues, and peaceful benches dotted around. On the way back, we stumbled upon some large cages with an albino peacock inside—completely unexpected, but quite a treat. We returned to the Japanese gardens when it was quieter. Unfortunately, my experience was still dampened by inconsiderate visitors. I’d waited patiently while some ladies got their photos, but then others just barged in front with zero awareness. Not the garden’s fault of course, just a general lack of manners. Overall, it’s definitely worth visiting—but I’d recommend avoiding weekends if possible. Also worth noting: the famous wicker toboggans nearby don’t run on Sundays, so plan accordingly if you want to tie them into the same trip.

Really nice botanical gardens, filled with a huge variety of flora. The views down the hill into Funchal centre are spectacular. You can either drive up to the gardens, get a taxi, local bus ( bus stop outside the lower entrance) or like us come up the main cable car, exit out to the right at the top then walk down to the botanical cable car and then into the gardens at the top end. ( this was €36 return for the main cable car and €22.80, including botanical garden entry fee, return, for the garden cable car, pay for these at the cable car, prices correct as of Nov. 2023 and based on two people) However, if you are infirm or struggle with hills, you might find the walk from cable car to cable car a bit of an ordeal, definitely not suitable for wheelchair users. The gardens have a cafe and toilets. In the garden are a wide variety of plants, a small museum, souvenir shops and a hot house ( which was shut during our visit). Even though November is considered winter here (24°!) Most of the plants were at the end of their season, so there are not many flowers, spring and summer are the best season for these. Having said that, there was still plenty to see. Be careful of the footpaths, and yes, the gardens are on a hill, so you will be walking downhill/uphill throughout your visit. There is a large pond with fish in it and smaller pools with floating plants on them, so beware, do not stand or let children near these as they look like solid ground but do contain water.

Category: Attraction. Reach this garden by taking the cable car from the lower station in Funchal. Then, when the cable car reaches the top, walk to the right of the cable car (as you are riding up) to the ticket booth for a different cable car to take you down (in a different direction) to the botanical garden. I recommend seeing this garden but I highly recommend that you see it BEFORE seeing the tropical garden at the Jardim Monte Palace, which is to the left of the cable car (as you are riding up). This is a really impressive garden but the tropical garden is better. If you go there first, you may be underimpressed with this garden. This is a true botanical garden. Everything is labeled with its Portuguese and Latin names. There are topiaries, medicinal plants, tropical plants, palm trees, indigenous plants and trees, frog 🐸 ponds (with frogs louder than you might expect), cacti, etc. The cactus area is especially impressive, with many huge specimens. There is also a cafe with indoor and outdoor seating and an amphitheater. It is really well done and worth seeing, but see it before seeing the tropical garden. After we worked our way to the bottom end of this garden, we exited the South Gate, from which you can take a taxi or walk down to Funchal. I got locked into the garden after closing time. I don't know why they don't have someone walk through before locking all the gates to make sure everyone is out. The lady at the ticket office told me that the stores close at 5:30 pm but you can still go out the gate at the bottom of the hill until 6pm. I'm wondering if that was a lie because every gate was locked before 6:00. I ran to every possible exit, panicking, trying to find a way out. Once I calmed down, it was nice to have the whole place to myself and to watch the sunset there. I had to jump 4 fences to get out because the main gates were too hard to climb. That was a decent upper body work out so I'm glad I'm an active person. I think many people would've had to sleep there if they got locked in. I took off 1 star because they need to sort out the gate times before more people get locked in, but the experience in the garden is 10/10. I should mention that there were A LOT of spiders so this might not be the best place for someone who's afraid of them but they were beautiful on the plants and their webs are so strong, they don't break if you push on them. It's incredible. I loved the spiders there just as much as the garden.

This is one of few gardens to choose from in Funchal, capital.of Madeira. It's much more rustic garden than an average European garden most of us are used to, and here lies it's unconventional beauty. It's not perfectly square and cut to a perfection, in fact it's quite opposite, it has a cob-wens on plants ( which surely serve a a feeding ground to mamu small lizards yiu will see on tne walk througkout of yje garden), and leavs thst fell.of seem.to be purposely left to further frlettalise the soil. The garden host all of the native plants of the island plus an impressive array of plants from all over the world. At the begging od the garden you will see a small museum that explains the origins of island and you are in for many points of view over Funchal which are stunning. Tip: it's great to take bus to the garden ( bus no 31 or 31a from centrum of Funchal) and then buy combined ticket for cable car and the garden at €28. Cable car to Monte and ten further to Funchal. The garden on its own is €7.50. the views are breath taking and while in the cable car going down you learn very well the perspective.
