One of the nicest meals we have had in Funchal 👍🏻 We called in earlier today in person & were lucky to get a booking for 8pm, inside the restaurant. There are tables outside, if one prefers, but it’s a busy narrow street & people are always walking past. Inside there was a wonderful atmosphere from the moment we arrived. The restaurant is bustling but not noisy. There was an excellent menu & a good selection of chef’s specials too, all at reasonable prices. We both had starters, my wife having a lobster bisque. It needed just a touch of black pepper & salt for our taste. I had shrimp with garlic & lemon. 👌🏻 Perfectly cooked & seasoned. For the main course my wife had a “special” of spaghetti with lobster & prawns. It was simply divine. Pasta cooked perfectly, & the same with the lobster & prawns. And it was a good sized portion too. I basically had the espetada (cubes of fillet beef on a basil wood skewer) with deep fried maze cubes. I ordered it medium rare & that’s what I got. Perfectly cooked & well seasoned too. Both dishes, and others we saw, were quite rustic, but I can honestly say those we had were very tasty. We finished by sharing a crème brûlée, that someone said was the highlight of their meal. It was good, but for us the main dishes steal the show. Including a 20€ wine & soft drinks our bill was just over 90€ I would recommend this restaurant.

First impressions were not good as me and my aunt stood by the entrance waiting to be seated while the sole two waiters in the whole restaurant ran around trying to cater for a lot of packed tables in and outside of the place. We almost left, as the waiters were swinging by us with delicious looking food for about 10 minutes without noticing us. But in the end we got seated inside and boy, am I glad we waited. For starters my aunt ordered prawn salad which was delicious, packed with tasty fresh vegetables, cooked prawns and lovely dressing. I ordered octopus in curry sauce which was nice, but I had better. The texture was a tiny bit chewy which was probably the only thing I can fault it. It’s well worth a try. For mains we couldn’t decide what to get so we went for a bit of everything: mixed fish and seafood platter for 2 people. This is a must try if you like seafood. If you don’t, this will change your mind. The amberjack especially was mindblowing, but everything else was really delicious also - well cooked, well seasoned. Cannot fault it a single thing, proving yet again that Madeira is the place to go to enjoy delicious sea food.

Came with friends. Ordered the traditional Grilled Limpets and Regional Beef on Skewer. Limpets was absolutely incredible and very flavourful. One of my friends had the Octopus Carpaccio and it was delicious. The beef however I asked for medium rare and whilst some of the cubes were cooked perfectly and was amazing, most of the cubes were either very rare or near enough blue which wasn’t very pleasant to eat personally as it was a little chewy, so I couldn’t finish. I actually never do reviews but I really wanted feedback on the night but didn’t feel comfortable doing so at the time but I still really want to share my experience with one of the waitress. Both the manager and possibly the owner was very friendly and kind but there was one British waitress who was a bit shocking. She started setting up our table and she spoke with a British accent so I asked her (as a fellow Brit) if she was from UK and which region she’s from - completely ignored me (she definitely heard me..) and was really disinterested in engaging with us. I understand if waiters are in a rush but I asked her at the start of her table set up and there was a lot of time for her to engage with us but instead, all of us felt this long awkward silence until she finished the set up when she didn’t answer. Then when we finished, I asked to pack my food (this fried cube dough which was very delicious) and she said there’s a charge for a box so I asked if there was just a paper bag we could have as a box wasn’t necessary. She didnt answer, walked away to get the bag but not before both me and my friend caught her rolling her eyes at us! Then when she came to take the payment for our bill, we were still trying to calculate our shares, she was very visibly annoyed at us and walked away and seemed very jmpatient. Again, I understand waiters/Waitresses (I was once myself) have little time to tend to everyone but there were absolutely no warmth and her mannerism was just constantly rude and impatient. We didn’t feel comfortable every time she served us and the dinner felt a bit tense. We overheard her speak to the table behind and she was also very condescending and rude. We actually planned on having dessert but we just wanted to get out as soon as possible. We all have bad days but it doesn’t justify how you treat people. Overall the food was pretty good but I’m not so sure I would dine again as I’ve had better in other restaurants in terms of food quality and most importantly.. service…

Our recent dining experience left us thoroughly impressed and satisfied. We indulged in a feast of flavors, starting with the Grilled Limpets and Fish Soup served with traditional bread. Moving on to the main course, we savored the Swordfish with Passion Fruit and Tuna Steak accompanied by an array of cooked potatoes. Each dish was a masterpiece of taste and presentation. The portions were generous, ensuring we left the table fully content. While the prices were slightly higher compared to other establishments, the quality and quantity of the food justified the cost. Additionally, the attentive staff made us feel valued throughout our dining experience, constantly checking in to ensure our satisfaction. In conclusion, this restaurant is a gem worth discovering for those seeking delicious food, generous portions, and attentive service. Despite the slightly higher prices, the overall experience surpassed our expectations, and we wholeheartedly recommend it to fellow food enthusiasts.

I don't recommend this place. It is expensive for what you get. The garlic bread is tasteless and comes in a paper bag on the table. We were wondering if we asked for take away but no, they serve it that way. Not impressed with the service. We ordered 1 beer and 1 white wine for drinks, they forgot about the wine and brought water that we didnt asked for, and charged us for it. We then ordered the tuna steak and octopus dishes. It comes with nothing else on the plate. You have to pay an extra 5€ for veggies or rice, on top of your 25€ fish dish. Ridiculous. The octopus was also tasteless. The tuna steak was overcooked. Would not return. Wayyyy better restaurants around the area. The patio is nice though. You pay for the touristy area and famous street the restautant is on.

During our short stay in Funchal, we were twice in Taberna Ruel. I would like to write that both time times we had a great time there, but not really. First of all food - both times it was really deliciouse - we had spada fish with the passion fruit souce and chicken with mashroom souce. Service was totally different both times. During our first visit, in the evening service was really nice and rather fast. Second time we were during lunch time and even thoug restaurant was almost empty, we had to wait for ages to get our food, and than even longer to get a check. Besides the time, service was ok - staff was friendly and polite and we got what we ordered Reasonably priced, comaparble to other restaurant on the same street. Food - 5*; Service - 4*
