Zur Höll gets four stars for the high quality food and very good value of it. Just beware you can pay only in cash. The place is small and could feel too small for anyone not liking to be seated very close to strangers. While for others the space tightness may be a welcomed experience. I can bear it for a dinner or two. I didn't enjoy the old style chandelier hanging almost all the way down to the table, so much so that I couldn't spot my friend seating in front of me. The staff is very friendly and supportive. English is spoken without much trouble. The policy about cash payment will feel odd, but as long as I've know the place, it's been like that. Though I don't visit it often, so exception might happen. Be sure to ask about payment method options before seating at a table. Reaching that place is not difficult, mind you, you have to walk away from the city center. While there are parking areas around the restaurant, they are mostly packed so I recommend parking in the major town parking areas then take a stroll within town.

We had made reservations in advance. In the moment our reservation conflicted with our Nightwatch tour, so we went to the restaurant early hoping we could get in. The tables outside were full, and the owner came out and greeted us, with a hug! Although he was very busy he found a table for us. They treated us like royalty! Every detail was attended to. The food was truly phenomenal! Often what you read about restaurants/bars doesn’t play out but this experience superseded all my expectations! They quickly realized I had made a purchase in advance to pick up - a wine and beer glass. They were extremely accommodating, wrapped them for travel, and I’m drinking from one as I write this. I had anticipated this would be a highlight of the trip, and it truly was! Drinking from these glasses helps me relive my/our time in Rothenberg, and elicits FOND memories! I can’t thank the owner and his wife enough. They were amazing as was our experience!

I’m posting the review now but we were visiting Rothenburg in August. I’ve read this is among the best restaurants in Rothenburg and a lot of people recommend it and even if it was that good in the time of writing I can’t say that is the case now. We reserved a dinner for two a day before leaving as we wanted to save the best for last. We were greeted by the owner and were seated at our table. The inside of the place is very narrow and cramped. The ceiling is lower so someone taller should watch not to bump their head on things. The overall feel is like walking into a medieval pub. There is an older couple that serve every table that I guess are the owners of the place. They were kind but I think we had a lot of issues with communication. We ordered a platter of cold cuts and variety of cheese. I liked some cold cuts but the rest was ordinary. After finishing the starters we waited for our main course. Firstly, we waited for the main course for 20-30 min and after it arrived we only got one plate of food. The lady came and asked if we need two plates to share. We told her that we ordered a second dish, but she told us back that thats the only thing that was ordered. I tried to talk to her what I ordered before and order it again but she got really snappy telling me another thing. After a few tries I gave up and got a pork knuckle with dumplings- and it was not what I ordered. I switched plates with my husband so I could eat something. I don’t appreciate that the lady came every 10min to ask if everything was ok, i think that the mixup of the order got us all anxious and this was making it even worse. We finished our food and payed straight away just to get out. If I don’t pay any mind to the experience we had I would still give the food a solid 3 because the price of 110 + eur was far too much for food that tasted as regular pub food. The cold cuts were the only thing Ive enjoyed. And we ordered soup, cold cuts, selections of cheese, breaded pork with chanterelles, and the pork knuckle we got and a salad. Drinks too. So maybe it’s a cool place to sit and have a beer but it’s very expensive for such ordinary food. All in all it was an underwhelming experience and I felt a bit disappointed afterwards. Forgot to mention you pay with cash here.

Looking for a dog friendly place to have dinner, we arrived at 9:02 pm and the young waiter very politely explained us that the kitchen closes at 9. As we were about to walk away a family from Stansted Abbotts appeared at the door and while Gary was giving them the news that the kitchen is closed, I was told by the senior waiter that it’s ok to come in and have dinner. 🙂 We shared table with our new friends, ordered our food and drinks and had an amazing evening. Pork shoulder was out if this world! Initially served with one dumpling and a scoop of cabbage, but staff comes back every now and then offers more dumplings, sauce and cabbage. The fish dish was very good so were the sausages. Local white wine smooth and dry. Perfect for me. Dessert came to finish us up. Amazing service, one of the kind atmosphere. All that justify the prices that are above average. Thank you!

Excellent food; unique and cozy atmosphere; and hospitable and generous service. The pork shoulder is incredible - a must order if it’s available as a special dish that day. Very reasonably priced for the portion sizes and delicious taste. It is cash only, but it’s more than worth an ATM run. Reservations are recommended as the restaurant is small and popular. When you call to make a reservation, ASK TO SIT IN THE CELLAR. It’s a single table located in the cellar, with room for up to 6 or maybe 8 guests. Dining in the ambience of the cellar will make for an unforgettable experience. As much as I loved the food and atmosphere, the lovely service was the star of the show. Everyone was so kind and generous, and they all effortlessly ensured we had a perfect evening.

We were lucky to get the table there without a reservation. The place itself is historic building aged 1,100 years. The atmosphere was great and relax. I saw many dogs with guests without any problems. Food is hands down amazing. They have the 3 dishes of the day plus the classics from the menu. We had the great pork steak with cheese on top and Franken sausages. Both were considered top traiditional german meals for me. They also have large variety of wine. Service isso attentive. They brought additional sides, if they noticed you are almost out. It's cash only, so bring some cash with you and should definitely reserve before. It's a must try! I would definitely recommend this place, if you visit the city.
