This is not just a venue - it is an experience. It is actually hard to write a review without spoiling the experience. It is akin to having gone to see The Mousetrap and then writing a review that reveals the ending.
Yes this is a soda, bar.... but it is actually more provided you know the secret. Go to the Billsons website and you will see the page for the soda bar with a small innocuous button at the bottom asking if you were looking for something else and whether you have the password. It is like Alice falling down the rabbit hole. Billsons have done this so well.
Regarding the soda bar - it's great. Family friendly, everything alcohol free. The decor is spot on. The staff are not just staff - to borrow a term from the Disney theme parks these people are better referred to as cast members.
Now - if you know the secret though a whole new experience opens to you. A wonderful dining experience where what you can enjoy is a tour desk force of local produce. Yes, you now can buy alcohol in this hidden world but once again it is not just a drink - it is experience.
Of course no one is ever seen leaving this hidden gem, such is the attention to detail.
Hopefully this review has piqued your curiosity without spoiling the surprises too much. It is now up to you to...
Read moreAttention to detail was pretty poor from the kid behind the bar. My girlfriend and I went past one arvo (after a recommendation from the Beechworth Information centre), with a request to get into the speakeasy. We had our infant daughters in prams at the time, and he told us to come back at 5.30pm when the bar opens. So, we came back at opening, only to be told by the SAME bar man that it's in fact an 18+ venue and we weren't allowed in. Waste of time! Not to mention, when we came in the second time we weren't greeted, there was absolutely no customer service. We did get a shrug of the shoulder though.
We would have been fine if he'd just told us upfront (re: entry requirements) but instead we wasted time...
Read moreHonestly … disappointed. We love the staff, food and drinks at the brewery and had such high expectations for the soda bar … unfortunately they were not met. Although the two staff behind the bar seemed friendly and warm, the greeter/ server made us feel rushed and uncomfortable. From the start, it wasn’t necessarily what he said but how he said it. Even when we asked for the bill, it was brought over with the payment machine … absolutely zero chance to review it and feeling forced to just pay on the spot. The food although nice, also felt like it missed the mark when paying on the more costly side. I’d also hoped to see a wider range of cocktails / drinks on the menu for a...
