If you're looking for a vibrant, flavour-packed Indian street food experience that hits all the right notes, Gol Gappa Restaurant is a must-visit gem. From the moment we walked in, we were enveloped in warm hospitality, bold aromas, and the kind of atmosphere that immediately makes you feel at home.
Let’s start with the ambience—contemporary yet rooted in tradition, with colourful decor, upbeat music, and a casual-chic vibe that sets the tone for a fun and flavourful meal. The restaurant strikes a perfect balance between a modern dining space and a nostalgic nod to the chaotic charm of Indian street food stalls.
But what really elevated our dining experience was our exceptional waitress, Ashvi. Friendly, attentive, and full of personality, Ashvi was an absolute standout. She guided us through the menu with genuine enthusiasm, offered spot-on recommendations, and checked in regularly without being intrusive. Her service was both professional and personable—she truly made us feel like VIPs. In fact, her cheerful energy added an extra spark to our evening. Every restaurant needs an Ashvi!
Now, on to the food—oh, the food! It was nothing short of sensational. The namesake Gol Gappas (Pani Puris) were the absolute show-stealer. Crisp, delicate shells filled with tangy, spicy water and a perfectly balanced potato-chickpea filling—each bite was a burst of flavour and texture.
We also tried:
Dahi Puri – creamy, crunchy, and beautifully plated, with layers of flavour in every bite.
Pav Bhaji – buttery, spiced mash served with soft, toasted pav—pure comfort food heaven.
Chole Bhature – fluffy, golden bhature paired with deeply spiced chickpeas. An indulgent, satisfying classic.
And the masala chai—absolutely amazing! Fragrant, rich, and brewed with the perfect blend of spices, it was smooth, warming, and the ultimate finale to a bold and flavourful meal. It wasn’t just a drink—it was an experience.
Final touches like fast service, good music, and a clean, lively dining area made this experience one to remember.
Verdict: 🔥 5/5 Stars A flavour-packed street food escape with elevated service. Ashvi’s warm and attentive presence was the cherry on top. We’ll definitely be back—and bringing more...
Read moreWas pretty weirded out by our experience here.
Were pleasantly surprised to find out they were open mid morning so we could have something different for breakfast.
We arrived to a silent and empty store. There was one other table so we went and sat down. It might've just been the time of day but the decor felt dirty and tacky. The little grass hut was very dusty and the girl was sweeping as we waited for our food. I would prefer to come in an hour later if they just prepared the shop before we went in.
The lady that served us was really not keen on being there. She death stared me when my partner went up to order. She also turned on the music once she had finished serving us. Just a really weird experience. All the cutlery, serviettes and water were self service. As we waited for our food we also heard a very heated yelling match between the girl who served us and whoever was in the kitchen. In an almost silent restaurant with one other table it made us very uncomfortable.
The menu was also a genuine magazine. There were pages and pages and pages of food, we didn't even bother going through them all. We ordered taster plates with a couple of types of curry. The prices were okay and not too out there but what we received we probably still wouldn't want to pay that much.
The plates were like kiddie plastic plates but then like prison trays. The Curry's were also very hit and miss. One of mine was lukewarm at best, the other two tasted the same just with different proteins even though we ordered different ones. They were also very stingey on the paneer as it came out with only two pieces. The yoghurt was also weirdly lukewarm and it made me feel sick.
The pickles I really enjoyed, they were very sour and salty. My partner couldn't eat it though. The rice on mine was tasty but the dessert was straight out of the fridge and very cold (even after sitting on my plate whilst I ate everything else). It tasted stale and was just soaked in sugar syrup. Pretty gross.
We also ordered a mango lassi which tasted like it had been there for a couple of days but wasn't too bad.
Overall, might return if someone can guide me through what the best dishes are. Otherwise I...
Read moreIt's been already five months since I arrived in Brisbane from India, and I was maintaining excellent stomach health until this morning. I found this place, GolGappa to be quite popular, so decided to visit this Indian restaurant with my friends to try out some desi foods after a long time. All of us are now greatly disappointed. It's a shame that you're charging such a high price for your food (I will explain why later), despite providing neither quality nor quantity. The food quality and the after-effects (that's what I am experiencing this morning) will certainly mislead local Aussies and other international people about Indian cuisine. As an Indian, I always talk about our delicacies, but visiting such places makes me feel very awkward.
This is just a specific review of the Vegetarian Thali I ordered for myself yesterday for $20.
I am writing a brief about that thali on what you can expect. (I customized it with butter paneer, haryali kofta, and on their staff's recommendation, I added daal makhani to have with the rice).
The butter paneer contained a single piece of paneer in the smallest possible size. Haryali kofta and daal makhani were okayish (5.5/10), but certainly spicy and not flavorful. There was one very small lonely gulab jamun that seemed like it had been disowned. The salad consisted of just some onions and I didn't try the pickle out of fear. The raita was like it forgot to serve its purpose. Finally, the papad was the only thing I enjoyed, unfortunately. My friends tried different dosas. And they are equally disappointed.
My rating would be 4.5/10 considering the food, ambiance, and staff behavior. I will not be returning to this place anymore. I hope it...
