I have 3 children in upper primary age. This information might seem irrelevant, but at that age, whether they choose one adult portion each or to share tells about the quality of the food.

And my kids all want their own portions at Goukai. The eldest loves a mixture of sashimi (hint - lunch set chirashi is great), number 2 is a salmon sashimi monster (and totally loves the salmon here), and the youngest cycles between the sashimi and cooked food. The wife loves the lunch sets (the seafood comes with an amazingly huge prawn), and the quality of the food is top notch. The chef is also into presentation - the food comes very pretty - and that's a big thing.

I wanted to try the lobster sashimi but it went out of stock. Maybe next time.

And yes I know I didn't upload any pictures with this review. It's a bit hard to do that when the food looks so good that I just dig in.

Totally recommend this place.

Ps: their daifuku...

Great Japanese spot with generous portions and fresh ingredients. Highlights for me were the 9-pcs Mixed Sashimi (fresh and well-presented). The Agedashi Tofu, which came in large blocks and was beautifully crispy on the outside. Also loved the Crumbed Shitake Mushrooms and Hot soba (or can choose udon) soup with tempura — both tasty, and not too salty. The Aburi salmon rolls were served cold, but the sauce with it really brought the flavours together - creamy, rich, and satisfying. The Karaage chicken curry rice, it was alright, but not our favourite.

Service was friendly, we were asked if we want warm water or cold water and we could also asked for more ginger. Relaxed atmosphere. Prices are a bit premium, but well worth it for the quality. Would definitely return to try...

Great new jap restaurant within the newer market square building. Love the ambience & vibes. Also really like their ordering system where each person gets a mini ipad— so so nice not needing to share one large ipad & its portable (some places have ipad fixed to one end of the table). Staff is really friendly and also offered multiple times to topup our water without us having to ask. They have good lunch specials with fresh sashimi. Their food is on the pricier side but i suppose thats the proce to pay for better quality especially when it comes to seafood. Reservations recommended as the place was very quickly full when we were there...

Beautiful food here yesterday! The Chicken and vege with Sob noodles was stunning. Very fresh ingredients and super tasty. Nice load of veges too which was great. I really enjoyed the Sake. The service was great and the two gentlemen servers were had were top notch. Provided a great service with a smile and greeted us when we came in (there is nothing worse when you are ignored when you go somewhere). They went above and beyond to make sure we always had water and if we needed anything. Great service team! Photos below of our meal- we would come back here in a heartbeat- my new favourite Japanese place! Very authentic- thanks!

If you’re skeptical, don’t be. This is a GREAT Japanese restaurant. I have never had Japanese curry this good in Brisbane. It was incredibly flavourful with a subtle sweetness to it, and the chicken was very fresh. And obviously as per the picture, it was a generous portion. My partner got the Teriyaki chicken which was equally fresh, large, tender and flavourful. It’s clear that everything here was well thought out. Staff were attentive and always ready to refill our water. And the atmosphere was perfect for a casual dining spot. We will definitely be back. Easily one of the best spots for donburi around Sunnybank.
