Pretty disappointing experience for my birthday day. The staff were friendly and the food was decent but our overall experience was severely soured by several avoidable issues.
Our large table for 16 was positioned close across the opening of the children’s entertainment area. This meant my that we had strangers children pushing past us, running screaming and tripping over our bags and coats. There was also a live band on the day which were entertaining but the inn did not plan to provide adequate space for them to perform. They decided to set up directly next to our table and also took one of our guests chairs which led to us needing to have to borrow a chair from a nearby table.
The staff also constantly forgot our drinks. I personally had to ask twice for my drinks that had not arrived. two other guests had to ask three times for their drinks and finally three more guests had to wait over 45 minutes for their drinks that they ordered to arrive with their food as it was a recommended pairing. They finished their meal and waited an additional 15 minutes past that to get their drink.
We did a semi-split bill which understandably takes a bit of extra time to put through but due to constant errors by the staff or POS system, it took us over 50 minutes for us all to pay. Then when we were about to leave the staff stopped us and said that there was still unpaid drinks. Upon inspection, the unpaid drinks were duplicate orders of the drinks we kept saying that we had not received. So not only did we not receive the drinks we ordered, but we were charged twice for them. The staff working behind the counter would not accept our refusal to pay for drinks we had not received so a friend of mine paid for the drinks to close the matter and leave.
It not only ruined our dining experience, but due to the time it took to receive our missing drinks and then pay for them, 90 minutes of our time in Hahndorf was taken away which means we did not get to explore the town as much as we wanted to. This was once one of my favourite places to visit but this encounter has made me never want to...
Read moreWe had been to Hahndorf Village during Good Friday 2025. Beautiful township, but too full of tourists on the day due to Easter holidays and a nightmare in terms of parking space. After 20 mins, we managed to find a street parking and then set off to walk around the village on foot. With a few mins, we realised that whatever we saw of the village and fall colours (which is a big selling point of tourism here) while driving around was the best approach to see the village in the otherwise crowded town on that day. Soon we gave up walking and hit the Hahndorf Inn, which was in my list of place to eat and drink the craft German beers. I ordered the beer paddle to taste the produce of their brewery, got the Fest, Helles, Hefe, Berliner, and Dunkel. The Berliner was a new type of beer I tasted, quite like the raspberry after taste but settled on the Hefe. Ordered the schnitzel, hotdog and fish and chips as mains and affogato dessert. Even though the restaurant was packed to capacity, the food came in fairly quick within 20 mins. The food served had big portions of food and chips, and the price was reasonable (I am from Sydney, everything looks reasonable in comparison!) with an extra surcharge for Easter. The beers tasted divine with the food, so got me an extra 6 pack of hefes to-go. The service staff were busy but were not being impolite of hurrying the customers, had a smile on them showing that they loved the crowd. Overall a great place and def recommended for dine in and the craft German beers they make in the German township...
Read moreI ate here one night at a table near the bar. I chose this restaurant because it was the only one open that had German-style chicken that was not Schnitzel on the menu. The staff were very young. They were nice enough but some hadn't been particularly well-trained to do hospitality. I ordered 'Oktoberfest chicken' then sat down. The table felt sticky and dirty. I waited for a reasonable amount of time, about 25 minutes. The young waiter brought out a large plate with enough chicken, French fries, and Rotkohl for two dinners. However, when I bit into it, I was very disappointed. The chicken was very bland and tasted more like it had been boiled than 'charcoal grilled'. Even the parsley was stale. There was nothing about it that was German or any other cuisine because there was absolutely no flavouring on it. I couldn't even taste salt. The gravy was almost tasteless. I couldn't believe it. The Rotkohl was even worse. I have eaten much better out of a can. Even the French fries weren't that great, but tasted better than anything else. This meal cost $29, for which I would expect a decent dish especially in an area where the rents must be lower than the cbd. Why subject customers to such sub-standard food? Surely some people will come back if the food is good? How much effort is it to put a few herbs or spices on a piece of chicken? Naturally, I will not be returning. Even if the lower prices of some of the other dishes make you want to try this price, my advice is to cross the road and eat at the...
