I have been to The Haus several times. We often take visitors here when showing them Hahndorf.
We have had mostly breakfasts here. The breakfast pizza is usually good, although not consistent depending on how busy they are. The last time we had it, it was soggy and the pizza base wasn't crisp. Even our guest admitted it was average.
Good to know: Ambiance is nice, especially in winter with the fireplace. You can book online, it's usually busy so I'd recommend that. Pricing here is around $15-25 for breakfast each, which I don't find great value considering the meals are pretty standard. (You can get the same at your local cafe for less) The build your own brekky is great for fussy eaters. Service is adequate, but depends on how busy they are. Order to serve time is ok. Not slow but not very fast either. Again, depends on busy they are. Food temperature is decent, but depends on how busy they are. Serving size is average. Not huge, but enough to fill you up. Parking is difficult in Hahndorf as usual. Didn't check dietery options nor accessibility (will update next time)
3/5 stars for The Haus as given the above, I feel their offering and value is satisfactory, however not outstanding.
All in all, I think The Haus could position themselves to be that 5 star destination restaurant in Hahndorf, if they simply tried harder, made itself... More exceptional. I dunno, better menu, service, value, not sure what. I guess I had expected more, but it seemed they simply rely on the default traffic that streams through this area, rather than trying to do anything special (which they have potential to do).
I will still go here time to time, but don't feel loyal, and am looking out new, exciting restaurants popping up in Hanhdorf to take my guests to.
Perhaps I will have to come back and try a lunch or...
Read moreMy wife and I had lunch at The Haus Restaurant today (17 May 2024). We had been to the restaurant many times in the past, but it was some years since we'd last been there last.
My wife had the Mushroom & Sun Dried Tomato Pesto Fettuccine ($29.90) with added Chicken Tenders ($7.90). Her meal was delightfully presented in a decor-matching pottery bowl; and she described it as delicious - so delicious in fact that there were no "left overs" to come my way!
I had the 350g Haus Chicken Schnitzel ($26.90) with added Creamy Garlic Prawns ($11.90) - and I was overwhelmingly underwhelmed! The Schnitzel was dry and tasteless, and was too heavily crumbed. Worse, it was over-cooked to a decor-matching dark brown, and was difficult to cut even with the specially provided knife.
Haus fries came with the Schnitzel - actually, most were hidden under the Schnitzel - but they were cold. And frankly, they looked like the left-overs from an earlier batch fry up; they were nothing like the fries shown in the photograph on The Haus webpage. There were some whole fries present, but more than half were over-fried, small chips from what might have started life as fries. The "leafy salad" served with the meal was tasty, but minute: far too small to make a difference to the meal.
In short, our visit to The Haus was disappointing. I rated the meal generously at three stars, but this was driven entirely by the excellent Fettuccine. It was certainly not...
Read moreWe didn’t have a reservation but got a table close to the entrance at 6pm. The restaurant was busy but not overcrowded. Staff were busy so we had to wait before we were seated. There is a bit of confusion on seating yourself as the sign says wait to be seated but no one is at the desk when you enter the restaurant and many people just grab a table. It appeared to be mostly tourists but some locals. Our waitress was polite and courteous but not overly outgoing. We opted for a couple of the German beers on tap. Considerably pricey for the sizes. We also chose a warm pretzel to be served with the beers and the Wiener schnitzel for the main course. The beers arrived fairly quickly followed by the main course. The pretzel came out after the main course. The waitress didn’t offer a sauce with the schnitzel and we had to order it afterwards. No follow up from the waitress on our meals/drinks. The duty manager visited our table several times and definitely made up for the lack of attention from our waitress. Overall, food was served hot and had a good flavor. Prices are somewhat inflated given they are catering to tourists. I didn’t get a warm fuzzy from the staff other than the duty manager. Both male and female toilets needed a good clean with overflowing waste bins. Always a good sign that attention to detail was not there. Worth a visit for the food but prepare...
