I took my wife out for breakfast for our first taste of Criterion Street Cafe! Your establishment is highly recommended by everyone I ask. The place was pumping and the servers were doing an admirable job of helping everyone. I ordered the French toast (which was exceptional) and my wife ordered the mushroom special. About 3/4 of the way through the mushrooms my wife pulled a medium-length, coarse, black hair out of the mushroom mix. We've both worked in hospitality and understand these things happen. So, we tried to inform the waiter in a circumspect manner. He was duely apologetic and offered to rectify the issue. He offered to remove the meal from our bill, but we were happy just taking off the coffees as the food was great.
When we went to pay, who we assume was the manager on duty (taking payments and working the coffee machine) insinuated that we may have put the hair in the food ourselves as 'everyone in the kitchen is blonde'. She had dark hair, there was a guy with dark hair, and another lady who was serving with shorter dark hair. She then stated that '... But I guess we can take care of the meal,' as if she was doing us a favour (when we already offered to pay for it). In all, it seemed very poorly handled by her, and exceptionally rude considering the situation. Upon speaking with other locals, it seems this person is the owner and has treated...
Read morewe had a middle aged female waitress who was so nasty to us. we sat upstairs and my 3 year old son cracked some salt onto the table, I was removing the shaker from him and explaining why that wasn't a good idea when the waitress came over and snatched the salt and pepper mills out of my hand. said nothing to me.
5 mins later my son accidentally spilt some water from his cup on the table. I found a cleaning chux on the service caddy and wiped up the table. I had to use an empty glass to squeeze the excess water, then again the nasty waitress was back. this time she snatched the cloth and cup and muttered something under her breath..
THEN, my friend hopped up to get a new water glass from the caddy for my son and the waitress TOOK IT OUT OF HER HAND and said "NO" and nothing else. just no.
we sat at the table for a minute in shock at how the waitress was behaving. it was obvious she didn't like children. she made that very clear. we got up and cancelled out order and left.
having owned a a busy cafe myself I understand the pressures but the attitude was horrible to experience. I'm sure this staff member would be loosing this business customers and money every shift they work.
I used to love going to this cafe but i will never go...
Read morerecently visited Criterion cafe Hobart, hoping for a relaxing and enjoyable experience. Unfortunately, my visit was quite disappointing due to the behavior of one of the staff members. After finishing my breakfast, I politely asked about the milkshake I had ordered, which still hadn’t been served. The staff member, who was working at the shake machine, responded in a dismissive and unprofessional manner, which made me feel quite uncomfortable.
It was frustrating to see that despite ordering the milkshake along with my meal, it only became an afterthought once my breakfast was already finished — making the whole point of ordering it feel pointless. To make matters worse, as I returned to my table, I noticed the staff laughing at me, which felt incredibly disrespectful and unkind.
I understand that everyone can have a tough day, but basic courtesy and professionalism should always be part of the service. The cafe itself has a lovely atmosphere and great potential, but I truly hope the management addresses this kind of behaviour so future customers can feel...
