A Disappointing Dinning Experience at Hugo Restaurant – February 4, 2024
My dinning experience at Hugo Restaurant in Sandy Bay on the evening of February 4, 2024, was nothing short of a debacle. What was meant to be a straightforward takeaway dinner of spicy dry fried trotters and cauliflower turned into a protracted ordeal characterized by shockingly poor customer service.
The process began seamlessly enough, with our order being confirmed and paid for upon arrival. A staff member, a Chinese lady in a white shirt, seemed competent as she processed our payment. However, this was the peak of our customer service experience. After a 15-minute drive home, we discovered that our order was completely incorrect. Calling the restaurant for a resolution only introduced us to their lack of concern and disorganization, as they were unaware of the mistake and bluntly instructed us to return to the restaurant.
Given our mounting hunger and the inconvenience already suffered, we decided to dine in at the restaurant instead of making another round trip. The establishment was far from busy, with only three tables occupied, but this did not translate to attentive service. Our presence was nearly ignored, and it took an inordinate 10 minutes just to get served the correct dishes after our return.
The service failures escalated from there. We were left with our meals but no utensils, and my attempt to rectify this was met with further delay. An additional 5 minutes was spent just to place an order for rice and request utensils, which then took another 15 minutes to be fulfilled, by which time our meals had gone cold.
In a last-ditch effort to salvage the evening, we sought assistance from another staff member, a male, hoping he could escalate our concerns to the manager or owner. Disappointingly, this plea for help was met with evasion and a clear reluctance to confront the issue.
To summarize, my dinner at Hugo Restaurant on February 4, 2024, was an exercise in frustration and disappointment. The staff's collective indifference, lack of urgency, and outright avoidance of addressing customer issues turned what should have been a pleasant meal into a regrettable experience. It's disheartening and unacceptable to have the taste of your meal overshadowed by the bitter taste of negligence and...
Read moreAt our household we're all a lil unwell atm so it was a late night tonight and none of us wanted to cook, so we went ahead, saw some great value deals and Uber'd something a bit different, and thankfully these guys were open quite late to accommodate.
And we got to try a lot of different food as a result (2 entrees, 3 mains and Yang Zhou fried rice!)
We got a meal deal, so we got mystery entrees in that, I think the 1st entree was 3pc fried rice cakes and they had a red bean paste inside them, they were absolutely delicious, the 2nd entree, was a 2pc of fried seafood patties or something? I wasn't a fan personally, but everyone else loved them.
As for our mains, our 1st we had Sweet & Sour Chicken With Rice and it was beautiful and succulent and the coating wasn't overly thick or oily, a very pleasant rarity! Our 2nd was Spicy Stir Fry Beef & Rice, the flavour was awesome, I would personally say it could of been spicier for my liking though, but it tasty and tender nonetheless! Our 3rd and final main was a classic Black Pepper Beef & Rice, the sauce it was coated in was perfect, not too watery and the not too thick, awesome main would recommend.
The mains were all super delicious and incredibly generous serving wise!
Finally the Yang Zhou Fried Rice was cooked to perfection and the combo of prawns and pork worked so well, amazingly well balanced, moist but at the same time had the perfect texture.
Overall, this meal was absolutely incredible, we loved every bit of it and the value was excellent, we'll have to come and dine...
Read moreFor the people below who said it's bad service, be glad. In China it's much worse.
Now to the food: The slow cooked beef noodle is authentic. The taste of the broth is exactly what you find in Lanzhou China. Not the "normal" broth filled with MSG on your usual "Chinese restaurant" in the shopping mall.
The salt and pepper prawns were massively massive. Taste was very good.
Cashew chicken was nice.
Dumplings came out nice and hot and with vinegar or soy sauce (if that's for you)
The food is the correct northern taste. Sure, it's not to everyone's taste. In the north, there is abundant use of vinegar.
The other dishes are exactly what you find in China. The taste isn't too strong. The taste is authentic. This is the main reason I give it the full five stars. Difficult to find a authentic tasting restaurant in Hobart. We believed we found it. Well done.
So before you keyboard warriors give harsh criticism with one star, keep this in mind. If sour isn't your thing, don't eat here. simple enough.
Hope this helps with the usual people who just order the fried rice or honey chicken etc. Take the leap of faith and be...
