This pub sits very conveniently in walking distance of the City Centre and Salamanca, and is well-worth the stroll for the food, wine list and service. The Duke makes a point of using local Tasmanian produce wherever possible. My wife had the belly pork which came with baby carrots, all sitting on a delightful corn mash with spiced apple chunks. I had the Shoulder of Lamb which came with baby beetroots, beans and cress, sitting on a sweet potato mash. Both meals were cooked perfectly and the presentation was excellent. The staff were very helpful and friendly, and able to discuss the menu options in great detail. There was also live music but it was a little loud in the dining room for us so we took our meal in the bar area. We highly recommend The Duke for it's high-quality food and excellent service.

Booked this venue for a conjoined 30th birthday Party. The venue had a wet dog smell, dog hair on the white table cloths & glasses, bar tender was new and although he done very well he was under extreme stress being on his own, food was very disappointing, they also ran out of alcohol by 10pm we had paid for the venue till 12, we had to take all our stuff including the cake to a new venue. Did get in contact but no response. As I am unable to respond to your reply. This was in November 2021. My name would still be in your Bookings. The young bar tender was very stressed and on multiple occasions over & under charged for the same drink. We had packed up and left by 10:30 as there was no alcohol other than beer. I have 40 guests to confirm.

Devil's Brewery is now operating the pub at The Duke on Macquarie Street. The indoor seating area has modern decor with good table spacing. You'll find Devil's Brewery beers on tap along with wine, spirits, cocktails and a focused food menu. Opening hours are 12pm - 8pm (Tues-Thurs), 12pm to 11pm (Fri-Sun), closed on Mondays. We stopped by for during a recent stay in Hobart for an late afternoon round of drinks and tried their veggie board. Stout and ginger beer on tap were both just fine, the platter was attractively prepared and everything tasted quite good. This was a nice spread, enough for two people to snack on over a round of drinks. Would gladly reorder the Veggie platter next time around.

I recently moved to Hobart and grateful that I found the duke. If you are visiting Hobart, The Duke is a must for those who are looking to avoid the tourist traps and experience the city as a local. As you walk in, you are greeted with a warm familiar feeling emitting from every corner. Noticeably, the staff takes pride in where they work, and is apparent through the attentive, polite, and friendly service provided. The menu has thoughtful range with something for everyone. Be sure to look at the specials that change daily. Cooked with expertise and care, the food is fresh, local, and delicious. I have trouble understanding how the reasonable prices can provide the absolute upscale quality and portions brought to the table, (I almost feel guilty but not enough that I don’t take advantage of it). Personally, the woodfire pizzas, that always come out perfect (not burnt as I find too often at other restaurants) and a few filled to the rim cold draft Boags are the perfect warm up to the brilliant live music. While so many places in Hobart routinely feature cover bands or a single acoustic guitar The Duke stands out as one of the few places where you can find a range of great unique original music. Local blues and jazz can be called their specialty, but it is also the spot to see the latest musicians express and impress with their incredible talents. I could keep going on, but I am heading up there shortly for my partners birthday. So Ill just say it would be a shame to deny yourself a visit to this...

Feel really sad to write this - I spent ages looking at family and dietary friendly pubs close by our accom! We had so many options and totally drew the short straw with this place. The reviews for looked really promising. Unfortunately there were many factors that let it down.

I tried to called three times to book for 7ppl and there was no answer. Walked with kids in tow and upon entry were greeted rather awkwardly by being shouted at across the room.

Advised when placing order that pizza would take a very long time - chose other meals as kids fading fast @ 6pm - but it turns out EVERYTHING took a long time! We waited nearly an hour for our meals. The food was cold, the eggplant dish completely under cooked and inedible in my opinion. The whole vibe was really weird. So disappointing. And for the $$ I actually considered asking for my money back.

I don’t really understand how an establishment could be SO BAD.

The only (partially) redeeming factor is that the host did turn out to be super friendly and kind to my kids and I - she apologised for the delay. Everything seemed to be failing tho. Obviously staff issues and I would suggest extremely inexperienced staff in the kitchen?? Really felt like a total...

My daughter and I dined here tonight. I booked mainly due to the positive reviews as we are here on holiday from Melbourne. We couldn’t have been more disappointed. We arrived at 6.00pm on a Saturday evening, no atmosphere at all. Only one person doing the bar and serving meals. We waited an hour with an almost empty tables to receive our meals. I ordered the jumbuck pizza after being told that the fish and chips were not available! I wrongly assumed that after such a long wait that it would be edible but how wrong I could be! The pizza base was the most anaemic looking base I’ve ever experienced… the pizza was supposed to have lamb in it but I did not see any evidence of that. Everything on the pizza was undercooked & inedible. The other meal we ordered was a mushroom risotto. My daughter ate it but said it was the worst she has ever tasted. I returned my pizza to the bar and told the staff member that it was undercooked- she asked if I wanted it put back in the oven?….Mmmm NO . When we settled the bill, another person (presumably the manager) tried to charge us for my pizza! Terrible service and food …& no, using the excuse you are under staffed is...
