UPDATED REVIEW: it's been a year since I found this spot and I still think it's awesome. I saw a review that said it wasn't fair to have inconsistent opening hours, got to disagree with that, these guys are generally open, smiling, got the tunes playing, the snacks popping & the coffee steaming. If they need the odd day where someone is ill or they just can't face the lockdown chats, that's fair enough. Cafe owners are people too. If you're travelling from far away, it's a good idea to call ahead, that goes for anywhere that requires a trip these days. If it's worth the drive, it's worth a phone call, and it's obviously worth a bit of consideration that they're providing a legendary community touch-point in these weird times. Cheers to the 112 York team, still the best coffee Southside!
I found 112 York through a recommendation from a client and what a find! As a NZ business owner in Melbourne, I'm always rapt to find fellow Kiwis doing amazing things in our area. These guys are flying the flag for NZ snacks & cafe culture with heart. For NZ ex-pats, you'll love the nostalgia of Top of the The Town Milkshakes, K bars and all the biscuit brands we miss from home. For everyone else - you'll just love getting a dose of the down to earth vibes that Kiwis naturally bring into everything they do. A warm welcome, relaxed hearty tunes, and the best damn coffee in South Melbourne from NZ's treasured Allpress Espresso. Try the lolly cake, a kind of slice to have with a cuppa, and be sure to take home some of the gourmet Anathoth chutneys & jams (they're usually sold out everywhere for a reason!) A huge well done to this crew for creating a bit of home here in Melbourne, that everyone NZer or not, can...
Read moreWalked past this joint a few months ago, but did not stop for drinks spoke to the guys at the joint and a decided we would drop by another time. Forward to today, went out for a drink close by and decided ‘hey let’s go to that joint on York St’, we went there and the guy at the counter did not even acknowledge us, we said hello and the place looked like it was hit by a bomb with beer cartons everywhere and four seats in front of the counter, I politely asked the guy can we sit here and he very rudely responded ‘what for’, I asked for a few drinks and he said ‘we are just a store selling alcohol for pick ups and delivery. They have a menu, displayed outside advertising cocktails and drinks, don’t have cocktails and food menu outside the store advertising it to be a bar or a restaurant if you are not in the service industry. If you are in South Melbourne for a few drinks, and decide to...
Read moreWhen we walking into this cafe this morning there was no one by the counter and I had to look around to see if anyone was working there. There was a person sitting and chatting with friends who seemed like the owner, but we would have only been guessing if he didn’t eventually come over. I asked for the egg and bacon roll with a coffee and he literally sighed and rolled his eyes. As a result my girlfriend refused to order there. I had to apologise for disturbing his rest and make very friendly for him to start talking a bit more and become more accomodating.
I was instantly going to give this a 1 because it was a shocking experience and I will never go here again! But the tomato relish and very tasty on the bun and $10 for breakfast and a small coffee is a good deal in general, so I’ve convinced myself to bump it up to a 2 star review. It’s potentially nice...
