Light, airy space with friendly and attentive staff. An eclectic menu means breakfast dishes and more substantial meals are available throughout the day. I chose to try out the espresso tonic (tonic water, coffee and ice) which was refreshing but nothing groundbreaking (although less of a type 2 diabetes risk than the ice coffee I had elsewhere which came with a huge scoop of vanilla ice cream). But the star of the show was the corned beef hash - slow cooker beef, shredded potato, cabbage, pork, two poached eggs, sriracha hollandaise, picked veg and pita bread. A far cry from the corned beef Brits will be more familiar with, this made for a substantial brunch that was satisfying but not gut busting. The combination of clean pickle flavours, creamy eggs and crunchy shredded veg was a real win. EDIT: I clearly couldn't get enough of the Auction Rooms as I returned on my final morning in Melbourne for another go. This time, I went for the Poke Bowl and was not disappointed - bravo, Auction Rooms!! If I'm ever back this side of the equator, I'll be sure to drop by again.

A lot of seating options, the more you look around the cafe the more you notice, all would serve a purpose. The kitchen/ service cafe also extends out into the main dining area so with high ceilings you get a segmented but spacious feel. For a meal the table I got wasn’t great (maybe I didn’t look like I’d be ordering food?). Summer tomatoes, with yogurt, and scrambled eggs. The little specs of charred elements throughout were awesome, perfect to break through the freshness and acidity from the tomatoes and yogurt. Speaking of the yogurt, it felt like the perfect creamy element to sit with the tomatoes; stracciatella and burrata sound fancy and yummy but after this idk… are they necessary? I’m sure the texture from the stringiness to the eggs helped here too. Two finals things to appreciate: the temperatures and the colours on the plate. Then I think of all the effort gone into the meal just to be served with what felt like a slice of white supermarket sandwich bread. All up, throughly enjoyed, it hit the spot. Would return.

I've tried chai lattes from numerous cafes around Melbourne, ranging from absolutely delicious to just average, but this one stands out as the worst I’ve ever had. To say this chai latte is “drinkable” would be a stretch. The flavor was so far removed from what chai is supposed to taste like that it honestly felt like I was sipping on muddy, stagnant water. There was absolutely none of the rich spice or warmth that a good chai should have – no cinnamon, no cardamom, no nothing. It lacked even the basic comfort you'd expect from chai, leaving behind a bland, murky aftertaste that was more unpleasant than anything else. I even tried adding some sugar, hoping to give it another chance, but after one more sip, it was still just as bad. I’ve never been one to leave a drink unfinished, but this was undrinkable. It wasn’t just bad; it felt as though something went horribly wrong in the preparation. If I had to describe it, I'd say it was closer to dirty dishwater than any semblance of a chai latte. For a city known for its high standard of coffee and chai, this was an unexpected disappointment. This was far below what I'd call acceptable, let alone enjoyable. Honestly, I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone, especially not to chai lovers.

I visited Auction rooms a few weeks ago with family, and resolved to come back. That’s what I did today. The place was busy, noisy, and the mood was generally happy. The staff were quick, polite, and efficient. I drank the coffee and ate the food. I ordered a cafe latte and French toast with bacon. Total cost: $36.86. To be fair, I was in a bit of chronic pain. So here comes the down side. The coffee seemed weak, a little woody & sour. Not undrinkable, but disappointing. The French toast was dominated by the whipped cream/marscapone confection. I am still questioning the actual toast part of the meal. I like my French toast to be a bit custardy. Today it appeared like pan fried bread. The outside was golden and buttery. The inside was dry. Maybe the mountains of cream masked the egg. The flavours and textures were mostly good. Too much whipped dairy. Not enough egg. It was very sweet, but that wasn’t a surprise. Again, I ate it, but was disappointed. They do plenty of food I enjoy. If I find myself there again I will specifically ask for a stronger coffee.

We went this past Saturday morning. It was good vibe at the place and each one of their staff was super helpful and friendly. Regarding food, seared barramundi was AMAZING. The skin was super crispy and the meat was so tender. Having it with the green gazpacho sauce was simply devine. The pickled cauliflower in the corned beef hash dish was very good too! All food and drinks we ordered were enjoyable. It was a satisfying dining experience. Will definitely take friends to go and try other dishes. On a side note, more to remind myself, must ask for the check than just pay at the counter. This is because we ordered a seared fish $26, corned beef hash $22, Mörk dark 70% hot chocolate with soy milk and a short black coffee, but I'm not sure how it ended up to be $69.03. Was there a 10% service fee? Maybe it was because I originally ordered a chai latte with soy and changed it to a hot chocolate too late so maybe that still got charged too? Not sure what happened there, but asking for a breakdown next time would help= )

The Auction Rooms never disappoints, and this time was no exception with their Grilled Chicken Salad, Avocado Toast, and Pesto Prawn Pasta. The Grilled Chicken Salad was a fresh and vibrant dish, featuring perfectly cooked chicken, creamy avocado, and a generous topping of shaved cheese. The blend of microgreens and tangy dressing tied everything together, making it both light and satisfying—a great option for a wholesome meal. The Avocado Toast was simple yet elegant, with creamy hummus as the base and beautifully sliced avocado sprinkled with sesame seeds and microgreens. A touch of lemon on the side added a refreshing kick. This dish is proof that sometimes, less is more. Finally, the Pesto Prawn Pasta stole the show with its velvety pesto sauce coating the pasta and juicy prawns. The addition of fresh green peas and a dollop of creamy ricotta added both flavor and texture, making this dish incredibly indulgent, this place never fails to impress!
