Where to begin on the terrible experience we just had at Cassette? Let me start off by saying maybe they were just having a bad day, because the reviews before this one have all been positive. But wow, what a shocker.

The first disappointment was being told AFTER we were ready to order, instead of as we sat down, what was no longer available on the menu. A small thing but still annoying.

Next we waited 1 hour for 2x rostis and 1x Reuben sandwich. The place was busy, but by no means full, however when we queried the wait we were told two things by two different staff. One told us there were only 2 chefs on and the other they had run out of some ingredients. Both of these things happen, I get it, but at no point were we told this while waiting, we had to go and ask. Also when the waitress came back to confirm our order, we began to suspect it was neither of those things and she'd perhaps just forgotten to put it in. All the while, we weren't even checked in on for a second round of coffees during this long wait.

Given we had other things to get to today, we asked for our food to takeaway. And boy were we surprised when we got home with the portion sizes for meals that cost $25 and $24 respectively. Not only were the portion sizes small but the food was average at best and not something we'll be returning for.

The real kicker of the whole experience was that we weren't even offered a discount for an hour's wait on food. And to be clear, the rosti is two small hashbrowns with poached eggs, and the Reuben is two pieces of toasted rye bread with some pastrami, sauerkraut and sauce. It's not anything that requires a long time to make.

Needless to say we were extremely disappointed, and had the food been better we may have been back to give them another shot but as it stands I won't be recommend...

I recently moved across the road and was very excited for my new local. The first time I ordered a takeaway coffee and sat in the waiting area (bar stools directly opposite the coffee machine). There were about 5 tables seated but I waited for 20 minutes for my coffee. Not one coffee had been taken to the tables during this time. Instead, the barista was chatting to her colleague. Finally, I could see a coffee about to come out, but then she took a sip and leant on the bench- it was a coffee for herself? Not off to a good start. I thought I'd give the place another go a few days later, for breakfast. My partner and I sat at the table opposite the kitchen pass. There were maybe 2 other tables booked; a quiet Monday or Tuesday mid-morning. I ordered the poached eggs on toast and my partner ordered the UK open muffin. This comes with fried eggs but he asked them to be poached like mine. The waiter asked the chef through the kitchen pass if they could do this. The chef said no, they don't do menu changes. Myself, coming from a hospo background, I understand this to some degree. But the floor was practically empty, so 'being busy' wasn't an excuse. They're also already making poached eggs for my meal so why couldn't they do it for my partner's too? It's not like I'm asking them to change the sauce that's already mixed in. With these 2 occurrences happening, I don't want to do back and spend my money at a pretty awful place. The staff are unfriendly, the decor feels like it should be in the CBD under an office, and it's pretty expensive for what it is. It's such a shame as it's opposite my front door but I take the effort to walk an extra 1km to not go to this...

🍳 Loaded Hummus, Fried Egg 🐖 Pork Sausage Jalepeno UK Muffin 🍚 Coconut Rice Pudding, Plum and Cherry Compote

Cassette (named after its former life of Dex Audio) is a new corner cafe and wine bar in Kensington with a sustainable and zero waste ethos. The small amount of waste they do produce is composted on-site. ♻️

The seasonal menu is globally inspired using mostly Victorian produce. The dishes are simple but big on flavour and the coffee is super smooth, by Seven Seeds (they also have takeaway cold brew goon bags 👀).

When we visited the Rosti was sold out by 12pm on a Saturday so get in early! I almost completely dismissed the Pork Sausage UK Muffin thinking it would be like a Sausage McMuffin. Think that but 10x better, tanginess from the onion jam and a fennel and spice sausage patty. Super filling and I’m glad they made it open rather than a sandwich.

The Loaded Hummus with added fried egg was a hit, texturally amazing and flavours on point. Would love some of that hummus to take home! The Coconut Rice Pudding was a miss for us. Not enough coconut flavour and the plum and cherry compote was abundant and sickly sweet to the point we couldn’t eat it. 🍒

An amazing, trendy, green space. Nothing else quite like it in the area, a top pick for brunch in the...

ORDERED: 🥔 Potato Rosti: house made thrice cooked potato rosti, charred capsicum caponata, capers, fresh zucchini + radish, two poached eggs ($25.00) REVIEW: 🗃 Crispy potatoes stacked in precious little layers that give you that good carb hit at Cassette’s. The eggs provide a creaminess to what otherwise a bit of a dry dish. It also adds a bright touch of neon yellow colour! The charred capsicum contributed a sweet smokiness while the bed of zucchini and radish brought more crunch. I did feel it was a little under-seasoned, so I went hard on the salt! 🧂 Overall, it was a satisfying meal. 👍 Service is attentive, and the interior has the makings of a modern brunch place with the exposed/featured cement work juxtaposed with the thriving plants along the windows. 🌱 It’s casual and not too busy, which means fast service and faster food!

📍 Casette Cafe and Bar, Kensington - 4.6 ⭐️ out of 5. Casette do things differently. Their menu changes based on what seasonal produce is available and they commit to being zero waste. This means they use every part of the produce they receive by either cooking it, pickling it, or composting it. Pictured is the: ➖ Potato Rosti with poached eggs, romesco sauce, brocollini and hazelnut puree ($25) ➖Levantine mezze (eggs, shanklish yoghurt, flatbread and seasonal pickled veg, $25) ➖Smoked salmon with zucchini, soft eggs, and bread (Special, $24) It is super lush inside with lots of beautiful plants and fun coloured interiors. They have a great array of sandwiches and pastries too and incredible coffee. Overall 4.6 ⭐️ out of 5.
