Mr Tulk Cafe — Restaurant in Melbourne

After a rough start to the morning, the only thing I was craving was a chicken toastie. Mr tulk has the yummiest chicken toasties in central, which I consume quite regularly, so I set my course with my mouth watering.

After arriving, the waitstaff seemed relaxed, and as someone who usually comes in the afternoon it was lovely to have the quieter time. My order was taken promptly and I proudly asked for a chicken toastie (apparently my sole purpose for existing at this point). This would fix the day. I got my toastie, and started to leave when I looked at the bag. Ham and cheese. Ham and cheese on plain white bread. Good god no.

I went over to the girl to confirm that it was a chicken toastie, maybe they used different bread? She looked at me, bemused, like i was an alien and said 'you ordered toastie'. I felt so disappointed and it wasn't worth arguing.

Now, as a hospitality worker of 10 years myself, this was an easy fix, right? And I know what I ordered, it was the only reason I came to mr tulk. The experience this morning, whilst it may seem trivial and dramatic for a chicken sandwich, has tarnished my opinion of mr tulk. I feel unsure and now I'm questioning myself. She offered to make another one- but she did not take me seriously or believe me. Who knows if they would have charged or comped.

The issue is not the sandwich, it is how it was handled. I don't really want to put myself in the situation again, being second guessed for something I know I ordered and having to validate that.

Great location and food but that’s where it ends.

About half way though my smoothie I had an unidentified person talking on the phone came over over and say he’s taking my drink. I had to stop him to see what was going on by keeping hold of the drink as he had already grabbed it and was walking away.

He stated something was wrong with it and attempted to walk away again. Did not identify himself at all. And when I followed up what was wrong with it, thinking that there was something potentially hazardous he went quiet. After much pushing, turns out that all that was wrong was they gave me the wrong type of smoothie.

It was delicious regardless so I said I would finish it. The server for our table hurried over and apologised after the man left and let us know that it was the owner!

The attitude of the owner was horrible. And the whole situation unavoidable. Had he simply come up to me and said hi this is who I am, sorry we gave you the wrong drink, all would have been well. Mistakes happen!

Then when questioning our bill he was rude and abrupt. Telling us to leave, and that he doesn’t need my money. A very hostile environment.

I hope if the owner was simply having a bad day, that tomorrow is sunnier for him.

Catching up with an old friend at Mr Tulk Café was such a lovely experience! 🫶 From the moment we arrived, the vibe was just perfect—bright, relaxed, and full of that amazing city energy 🌆✨. We decided to sit outdoors, and honestly, the seating area is fantastic. The fresh air, greenery, and city backdrop made it the ideal spot for a long, leisurely catch-up ☀️🍃.

We ordered the schnitzel, and wow—it was absolutely amazing! 😍 Crispy on the outside, juicy and tender on the inside, and full of flavor. I was really grateful that the staff were happy to warm it up for us, which made it taste even better. To go with it, I had a latte, and it was just perfect ☕❤️—smooth, rich, and expertly made.

The service was friendly and attentive without being intrusive, making the whole experience so comfortable and enjoyable. The café has such a warm, welcoming atmosphere, and it’s clear they care about creating a great experience for their customers 🙌.

Overall, Mr Tulk Café is an absolute gem. Whether you’re meeting friends, enjoying a casual breakfast, or just soaking in the city vibes, it’s the perfect spot. I’ll definitely be coming back to try more from the menu and enjoy another beautiful day in their outdoor seating area 🌿🌇....
