I recently had the absolute pleasure of visiting the Penny for Pound coffee shop on Cochranes Rd, and I must say it was an experience worth raving about. From the moment I walked in, I was greeted with an amazing energy that seemed to permeate the entire space.

The service was nothing short of exceptional, and it's not often that you find a place where the staff goes above and beyond to make your visit special. Daniel, Charlotte, and Alex, the lovely individuals behind the counter, were not only friendly and welcoming but they had this infectious energy that just made my day. Their smiles were genuinely heartwarming, and it was evident that they took pride in what they do.

As if the great service and fantastic ambiance weren't enough, the background music in the café was just perfect. It created a warm and inviting atmosphere that allowed me to relax and enjoy my time there. I found myself tapping my foot to the lovely tunes, which added to the overall charm of the place.

Now, let me talk about the real gem of Penny for Pound – their Mortadella panini. These delightful sandwiches are incredibly hard to come by, and to my amazement, this café had them on the menu! I ordered one, and it was simply heavenly. The Mortadella panino was delicious and made to perfection. I paired it with a coffee that had a touch of honey, and it was hands down one of the best cups of coffee I've ever had.

This little coffee shop is a true hidden gem on Cochranes Rd. I can't emphasize enough how wonderful my experience was at Penny for Pound. It's not just a place to grab a quick bite; it's a destination for those seeking a haven of good vibes, great food, and even better service. I'm already looking forward to my next visit, not just for the outstanding Mortadella panino but for the smiles and the inviting ambiance. It's become a go-to place for me to relax and get some work done.

In conclusion, I highly recommend Penny for Pound to anyone in the area or passing through. It's a unique and heartwarming café experience that you won't want to miss. The combination of amazing service, positive energy, smiling staff, and those hard-to-find Mortadella panino's make this place an...

Huge venue, very up market. Cool brutalist building. Exciting watching the pastry chefs hard at work through a glass partition. Second ever try of a red velvet cake. Surprisingly dry. Was it an old bake? Definitely prefer a cookie version to this. Not really anything special. Isn’t red velvet supposed to have a very light texture, hence “velvet”? This was dense. A nice combination with the cream cheese but if I was here for the cream cheese I would have ordered the carrot cake which looked amazing. They have a very extensive and exciting-looking pastry cabinet. I actually came for their Easter special advertised on Instagram - an ice cream sandwich made with a hot cross bun. Wasn’t available today - I was told to return closer to Easter.

Update: Penny for Pound X Holla Gelato icecream sandwich promo. Tasted like the outrageous gimmick it was. A tragi-comedy - and I loved every moment of it. Laughed and smiled the whole time. I felt sorry for the icecream being pushed around by the dark syrupy cinnamon and fruity toastiness of the bun (yes it was a toasted, sticky-glazed and richly spiced hot cross bun) and sorry for my teeth that had to navigate the hot and cold simultaneously. The icecream would have been better on its own but I was determined to eat it as the sandwich it was, tasting both elements in every bite. Thank you so much, you generous public image caretakers at Penny for Pound, for my free Easter...

Visited again 30.11.22 * Everything good again..great coffee, Reuben Croissant (full and flavorsome) more so than the Spinach and Cheese croissant which was still very nice. Recommend them warmed up so as to get the light buttery finish..service was spot on and Steph gave us excellent service - thanks for another pleasant brunch Steph. Updated Review ** Thought I'd do the right thing and give them another go, after previous vist (details below with 1 star). Visited yesterday (27.10.22) late in the afternoon and must say all aspects were very good. The staff were all very polite, service was spot on and coffee and Portuguese Tarts were excellent. The tarts could have had a little more filling but at $4 a tart you couldn't complain, they were light, buttery with a nice balance of sweet vanilla and caramalization. A much better experience and will go back again. ------- Original review Sept 2022 -------- Was looking forward to having a quick coffee and cake/pastry, with my wife, daughter and 2 grandchildren. Website states closes at 4pm. Arrived at 3.15pm to be told closing early and can only have takeaway (which we declined). If you intend to turn customers away from 3.15pm please have the courtesy of updating your website to say "only takeaway after 3pm". A bad customer experience, especially for kids during school holidays. First...

Modern cool bakery and cafe. Great food with attention to detail and good balance of flavours. The open kitchen to see the kitchen rolling perfect croissants and loaves of bread is fascinating. They have a wonderful collection of baked items - hazelnut croissants and donuts looked fresh and amazing!

The experience started great as we walked in and were welcomed by lovely staff. Unfortunately that’s were the good vibes ended. Once we were seated it took far too long to then be attended to so we could order which was a surprise considering the large number of staff walking around seemingly doing nothing. We ordered the cold brew drip and a Rueben croissant. Before we got those we got a bottle of water with a horribly dirty rim. When I asked for a new bottle the waiter proceeded to grab 3 bottles, all of which were dirty so he went to wash a bottle and give it back to us.. still dirty. Our coffees came out and while one tasted wonderful the other was clearly the bottom of the barrel and tasted like bitter grounds instead of beautiful coffee. Finally the croissant came out. The croissant its self was clearly undercooked and while the layers were created well the overall taste was chewy and soggy. It wasn’t heated the entire way through, instead the middle was just cold wet meat. Unfortunately we are left with a dissatisfied experience and overall disappointing time. Not worth coming to dine or even for a croissant. Best thing you could do is by the tray to bake your own at home so at least your croissant will be cooked through. $19.70 for 2 small cold brew and a soggy Ruben croissant.
