Noone asked me to write this review. I'm just really happy. Yesterday I walked in because it looked cosy and their sign told me what they have. But they have a lot more than the sign said. I had coffee, a roast roll and a softdrink. The meat was soft and tasty where normally I am waiting to taste a good bit and chewing through tough dry meat. This was really juicy, soft, obviously not cheap meat, perfectly cooked and kept well. The coffee of course is perfect but this is Melbourne so ... I came back today because yesterday was so good. Again I was greeted warmly. I have ordered bacon and eggs and coffee and a soft drink. They have a big menu, home-made salads, a great range of drinks. The bacon and eggs was great - 2 eggs and generous bacon. I wasn't quizzed about how I wanted my eggs because it's bacon and eggs. So refreshing. And the toast is NORMAL TOAST not some bizarre inedible artisan rock cake. The people watching here is good. It's cosy and homely but in a gritty part of town. I really like this place. If I was a local I would come here to do some chill tablet work, get away on my own, and have what I really like to eat and drink. Sydney has messed up by sanitising all the homeliness out of eateries. This coffee house is more than a coffee house or Cafe. Melbourne seems to understand that the next step forward is to step over the trap of conforming and flipping every business. This place is here to stay and won't become a dead zone because the focus is on giving people what they don't even realise they needed.
PS The background music is great, soulful, and loud enough you can. Listen to it if you want but definitely not too loud to affect a conversation between friends.
Oh and guess how they serve milkshakes? In an annoying glass that has a volume of 14ml and with cream squirted on top? Oh no. This is $6 metal cup...
Read moreWe were heading to Immigration Museum by tram & this cafe is at the stop. Doesn't look much from outside but what an eclectic interior, very well done with lots of memorabilia & atmosphere. Run by a family for over 30 years & offering eat in & take away food such as pasta dishes. Good coffee, friendly service & very affordable prices for Melbourne. We liked it so much we went back for lunch after museum! Toilet on-site too. Opposite Melbourne Aquarium & a block from Immigration museum....
