Popular South African ribs and smashed burger joint Rocomamas has opened in Australia, and I am so lucky that it's in my hood on Chapel St, Windsor. I went as a plus one to their launch night. South Africans know lots of things, like playing cricket, rugby union, safaris, milk tert and speaking with awesome accents, but they also know how to cook meat. Ribs so juicy they fall off the bone, and tasty smashed patty burgers. The garlic cheese balls were pretty spectacular, there were ones with jalapeno too which were a bit intense. The interior is very orange, matching their branding. The lighting and signs were fun. Very inviting and fits with the other bars on chapel street, and should be competitive with the lack of rib places. I feel they could play on the South African thing more. I'll be interested to know in this hyper competitive burger market whether they will survive, but they have a decent offering. I'll definitely be back. or in South African, I'll bee beck.

Been here twice. Hit or miss when comparing the two instances. First time (photo added) i went i got the rib and wings combo and the cheese and bacon balls. Ribs were cooked well and were saucy. Chips were salted well and was crunchy - but a bit oily. The buffalo wings were dry but the flavour was nice. Cheese and bacon balls, salty, cheese not melted and just didnt really feel properly cooked but rather quickly fried. Second time got the half rack of ribs with chips, 8 buffalo wings and a burger (don’t remember which one). Ribs were chewy and had barely any sauce. Buffalo wings again were dry (thought I’d give it another chance). The burger we had was good but a bit boring. The chips were the same as the first visit. Probably just don’t go at a busy period, quality flies out the window, each dish is served at seperate times and chips being forgotten. Pretty mid to me, better off going to royal stacks for burgers or old school pizza for ribs.

This place is just too hit and miss. And tonight was the last straw for me. I got ribs, wings and chips. My biggest problem is with the 600 gram short pork ribs for $42. The order felt light so I put the ribs on the electric scales I happen to have on my bench. Unfortunately they weighed just 489 grams - packaging included. This is unacceptable. If you make a point of advertising 600 grams, then make sure it’s 600 grams. I just felt really ripped off. Secondary to that, the quality is not great. Both the wings and ribs were really dry. It felt as if they were sitting around already cooked for a long time and when my order came in they were simply heated up to serve. Or in the case of the ribs, burnt over flames before served. It’s a real shame, because I have had good food here before. But all too often now, it’s a similar story - small portions, dry and poor quality food.

Tried Rocomamas for the first time, not the worst experience I’ve ever had, but definitely not quite the best. The burger (limited edition “Firebird”) was tasty but I had a few issues with it. 1. There were waaay too many chillies in it. I did not realise until I was mostly through the burger, just how many chillies it contained. Now, I LOVE spice but the chillies were excess and I did not fully understand until the next day when my stomach was in the most incredible abdominal pain I’ve experienced in my life (I’ve eaten many many chillies before but nothing quite like this). I think you need to cook your chillies or lower down the quantities (I warn people to pick some out), because raw chilli is just lethal 6-12 hours later when you need to use the facilities. My 2nd Issue was that the chicken looked absolutely nothing like the photo posted in your website. The photo posted there shows this huge chunk of fat deep-fried chicken covered in what looks to be some kind of red glaze, yet what I received was a fairly thin slice of fried chicken with no “red-looking” hot glaze in sight. I also had an issue with the chips. I only wanted a small amount, but when I ordered online (and clicked on the “small chips”), it would only allow me to upgrade to large for an extra $3 and didn’t let me choose “small chips” as described. The chips were not bad, but skinny chips, just as I could of gotten at Maccas for a 1/4 of the price. I paid $9 for these skinny chips? A bit overpriced if you ask me.

Overall, not a bad meal, but a bit disappointed seeing all of the good reviews. I’d consider trying again, but would definitely try another burger and not the ones with raw chilli and would not buy the chips...

To start of, if Google allowed, it would be zero stars from me.

Horrible experience today. I was on break looking for a good bite and came across Roco Mamas, I made the choice to order here and try a burger meal based on the positive reviews, boy was I wrong.

I ordered a take away meal and waited patiently for my order. After about 15-20 minutes I asked for an update on where my order was and was told “it shouldn’t be too long, we’ll call your name out” so I waited and then waited… and waited… almost 40+ minutes passed and my order never got called out.

I went up to the counter as I was sitting at the table closest to the counter and said I couldn’t wait any longer as my break was over and wanted a refund, they told me “we called you and you didn’t answer” that’s not true as I was so close to the counter and would have heard them call my name as I was waiting eagerly for my food.

I was really frustrated at this point and just wanted my money back to get out of there, so I presume it was the manager that came (with my food in the bag) and rudely told me “the girls called your name out and you didn’t pick it up, anyways we’ll give you the refund but you won’t be getting the food” I was disgusted at that answer as the least I would’ve expected was some understanding and a good gesture for someone who has been waiting over 40 minutes for their food.

Horrible. Left so disappointed and never had any food on my break. (Which I presume they chucked out in the...

It was a quiet night when I went to pick up my takeaway order. There were only two other tables dining in. I informed the lady at the register I was there to pick up my order and gave her my order number. She advised me that the order was still being prepared. I took a seat at the table right in front of her so she could let me know when it would be ready. I sat there for nearly 12 minutes before I noticed she packed up a bag with an order and stapled a receipt to it. She tucked it to the side without saying anything. I watched on to see if she would call me over if it was mine. She continued about doing her work as I waited. After another 8 minutes had passed along I went over and asked her if my order was ready and she looked at me blankly and said "yeah" as she handed over the same bag she had put aside. So it was ready this whole time and you didn't bother telling me even though I was literally sitting at table right in front of you. She hadn't even had to serve anyone else in the time I sat there waiting. I would understand if it was a busy night but not if all you're doing is standing there and wiping down the bench.

It's a shame I used to love coming here in the past but over time the customer service has taken a massive plunge but the food is still amazing. Sadly it's not worth it if someone is not going to value...
