A stones throw away from Queen Victoria Markets lies a string of eateries and Rose Garden BBQ always has a packed house whether inside or outdoors. We'd gathered colleagues and headed out for lunch and the top ten menu looked appealing - I chose #2 Fried rice with shredded duck and preserved vegetables.

Within a jiffy a generous plate of delicious fried rice was served. Sumptuous, flavoursome, I enjoyed every spoonful. The duck is delicious but was expecting a piece of duck rather than it be mixed in the rice. Will have to visit again for the roast meats, those ducks hanging in the window are a typical calling card of temptation!

Another visit to try more of their roast meats. I chose the mixed combo of rice with a choice of 3 meats - roast duck, roast pork, and BBQ pork were my choices. Within a jiffy a plate filled with rice and succulent juicy meats is served. Complimentary refreshing Chinese tea is at the table. The plain rice has been covered with a sauce of some type which enhances the flavour. I like the crispy duck skin and juicy flesh. The roast pork is the best, crunchy crackling, juicy pork oozing flavour, this was thoroughly enjoyed. The BBQ pork is also tasty. Bring an appetite and get in early as this place fills up fast.

Another visit for some spicy chicken wings with rice. Lovely crunchy perfectly seasoned skin surrounding tender chicken and covered in chilli flakes, these are very enjoyable. Along with the chilli sauce and rice this makes for a very satisfying lunch. I'd swapped some of my meal with a colleague for the shredded duck fried rice which is also delicious.

Absolutely rude people with zero customer service ability! I came here with my wife, baby and a pram. Whilst lining up to order the food we found an empty table so I had told my wife to sit there with the baby and the pram. Upon ordering, my wife had been kicked out by one of their staff and she was told that she could not sit there with the baby and the pram if she has not ordered and my wife told the staff that I (my husband) was in the line and about to place an order, but the staff still kicked my wife and my baby out of their seats and insisted that the rule is we have to place an order first before reserving any table even though I was already next in line to place our orders. So my wife and my baby got out of their seats and told me to just go elsewhere which I’m glad we did! As we were leaving another staff or maybe the owner said that we are not being kicked out, we just have to follow “their rule”. Mind you there is no signage to say that we must place order first before sitting down to reserve any table.

DO NOT come here unless you want to be served by rude people with zero care for anyone!!! They are...

If you are looking for cantonese style of quick feed then Rose Garden is the place for you. Every single dish which is usually served with rice is super yummy. Doesn't matter if you are a student, working professional, back packer or just passing by the city, this joint offers big portions for few bucks. I have been going here since last 2 years and tried almost everything on the menu. This resto is a must try for anyone who loves eating in the city. The only problem with this joint is if you are a slow eater and also chatting away with your mate then you might be surprised because the staff can take your dish halfway even without asking yah. That is why I just gave em 4 stars. They need to keep turning the table as it can get packed during lunch or dinner time so forget about having a 2 hour sesh you gotta hog, rub (stranger sitting on the same table who is feeling yah arm to arm) and run. The food is really good and if you can't take rude staff then just get take away and I promise you won't be dissapointed...

Rose Garden... there's something special about this one. It's one of those places in Melbourne that you really have to be lucky enough taken to discover it. From the outside, it's like any place with roast duck and crackling pork hanging in the window. It's only once you go inside, take a seat and watch how the place runs that you realise you're about to have a great experience. Rose Garden runs like a well-oiled engine: one person goes back and forth from the front, lugging pots of steaming white rice to the kitchen in the back, two or three others man the floor, taking orders and refilling pots of tea while engaging in friendly banter with each other. Meanwhile the chefs in the back smash out dish after dish in record time. I'm not kidding, my shredded duck with preserved vegetables in fried rice came out in 6 minutes flat. If you're ever around Victoria Market and are in the mood for Chinese, do yourself a favour and come to Rose Garden. It will be the first time of many that you'll be going. Cash-only.

This restaurant reminded me of home and the roast duck was definitely the star of the show. Coming from Singapore, we are no stranger to a good roast meat place and Rose Garden was definitely of high quality. Mixed plates of meat on rice are possible at varying prices points and we got a roast duck + charsiew with rice, as well as a garlic chicken egg fuyong over rice. I would probably recommend picking another protein for the egg fuyong as the garlic chicken would be better savoured on its own. Portions are massive and well worth the money. The service can be rough and tumble, direct and to the point, while taking care of your every need--exactly true to form for any old school asian place, so please take that into consideration if that's something that bothers you. Cash only under $40 if my memory serves me right and free flow pu'erh tea. We went on a weekday right past 11:00am and did not have to worry about queues although the place started to get busy soon after.
