Restaurant Review: Sulhwa, Little Collins Street

Atmosphere: Sulhwa, located on Little Collins Street, offers an exquisite dining experience in an elegant and sophisticated atmosphere. The restaurant's interior is beautifully designed, featuring modern decor, soft lighting, and stylish furnishings. The overall ambiance is refined and perfect for a special occasion or a memorable dining experience. Whether you're visiting for a romantic dinner or a celebratory gathering, Sulhwa provides a luxurious setting that exudes charm and sophistication.

Specialty Dishes: Sulhwa specializes in authentic Korean cuisine, showcasing a range of traditional dishes prepared with meticulous attention to detail. The menu boasts an impressive selection of specialty dishes that capture the essence of Korean flavors and culinary techniques.

One standout item is their signature Bulgogi, a Korean-style marinated beef dish. The Bulgogi at Sulhwa is expertly prepared, with tender and succulent slices of beef marinated in a savory blend of soy sauce, garlic, and other spices. The dish is served with a variety of accompaniments, such as kimchi, pickled vegetables, and steamed rice, creating a harmonious combination of flavors.

Another highlight of the menu is the Japchae, a popular Korean noodle dish. Sulhwa's rendition of Japchae features translucent sweet potato noodles stir-fried with an assortment of colorful vegetables, mushrooms, and thinly sliced beef. The dish is bursting with umami flavors and offers a delightful textural contrast, making it a favorite among diners.

For those seeking a unique culinary experience, Sulhwa offers a selection of traditional Korean hot pot dishes, such as Sundubu-jjigae. This hearty and spicy tofu stew is made with silky soft tofu, fresh vegetables, and a flavorful broth that's infused with Korean chili paste. It's a comforting and satisfying dish that showcases the depth of Korean flavors.

Price: Sulhwa provides a high-end dining experience with a corresponding price range. While the prices may be on the higher side, they are justified by the quality of ingredients, culinary craftsmanship, and the overall luxury dining experience. Main dishes typically range from $25 to $40, depending on the complexity of the dish and the ingredients used. The portion sizes are generous, ensuring that you get value for your money.

In addition to the delectable food, Sulhwa offers a curated selection of fine wines and spirits that pair perfectly with the flavors of Korean cuisine. The attentive and knowledgeable staff is always on hand to provide recommendations and ensure a seamless dining experience, further enhancing the value of your visit.

Overall, Sulhwa on Little Collins Street is a top-notch restaurant that excels in delivering an exceptional Korean dining experience. With its elegant atmosphere, authentic specialty dishes, and a touch of luxury, this establishment is perfect for those seeking a refined culinary adventure. Whether you're a fan of classic Korean favorites or interested in exploring new flavors, Sulhwa is sure to impress your taste buds and leave a...

Had a terrible experience coming to Sulhwa.

Firstly, we had to sit next to the door and they wouldn’t let us close it and on these cold Melbourne nights was not ideal but we looked passed it.

We sat down and ordered through the QR code, waited 40 minutes so decided to check on the status of the order and found out no one had checked any of the orders! Ended up waiting another 30 minutes for them to try and play catch up just for us to receive our orders that were all pretty average considering how long we had to wait.

The cherry on top of this whole situation was that one of our group ordered the Ice Kacung and they failed to mention they didn’t have it, so we waited 30 minutes+ just to find out they had taken his money, and couldn’t give him a refund. He ended up leaving empty handed with no compensation, just to await for them to contact us tomorrow because they had no one capable of providing a refund.

The matcha lattes were lukewarm at best and mostly just foam. The mochi in the injeolmi toast was more slimy than chewy. Shaved ice just tasted like frozen milk. The only decent things were the pre-made cakes and the mango pudding but definitely not worth waiting for over an hour especially when all these things are premade.

It’s honestly ridiculous to run a business where you don’t have staff capable of the basics of hospitality like checking orders, communicating with the customers or anyone with the authority to issue a refund in the instances these circumstances arise to be present. Oh and the surcharge on it as well made it even worse considering the service was abysmal. Way too overpriced.

Wouldn’t recommend visiting this place any time soon. Defs not worth the...

Bingsu – the quintessential summery treat, or if you don’t mind the numbing cold, then just as invigorating during winter too. I visited with a few friends and we ordered 4 different flavours bingsu to share amongst ourselves. Super fine shaved ice mixed with condensed milk that melt-in-your-mouth, it was hard to choose a favourite as each excel in their own way.

The Classic Korean Injeolmi was without a doubt, a classic. The earthy and nutty flavour of the injeolmi (soybean powder) complemented the sweetness of the red bean, as was the case with the fusion between the pumpkin cream cheese with the red beans in the Honey Pumpkin bingsu. The Honey Melon was beautifully presented in a honey dew cut into half, and filled to the brim with shaved ice and melon balls. Lastly the Mixed Cheese Berries is one for those with a sweeter tooth, as the berry coulis made this the most indulgent out of the 4 that we tried, but the tanginess of the cream cheese definitely helped balanced out the richness.

We also tried the Injeolmi Toast, and this was by far one of the best I have had in Melbourne. Perfectly toasted white bread, generously dusted with soybean powder, drizzled with condensed milk, with a smattering of almond flakes for crunchy texture, and stuffed with chewy rice cake. If you haven’t tried this before, you are definitely missing out.

A cosy place with adequate amount of seating, but don’t worry if you can’t grab a table as they do takeaway too. Just make sure you consume them...

A long time fan of Sulhwa's bingsu flavours, they have added some new creations to their menu! 🆕 Seasonal Dessert Experience Set ($18.5) - 🍧 Bingsu: matcha & yuzu - 🍵 Drink: watermelon soda or hot tea - 🍰 Seasonal shortcake (persimmon) and hazelnut cube (choc cream & hazelnut praline) The Seasonal Dessert Experience Set is only available from 12 - 5pm (daily), really good light dessert option/ if you want to sample different flavours. The flavours will change every month, it consists of a cup size bingsu, drink of your choice, a sample size cake, and chocolate cube. 🆕 Snowy Mochi ($15) Cream cheese mousse, baked cheesecake and mixed berries wrapped in mochi, topped with yoghurt crumble. For the price, I was expecting more of the cheesecake component, but it tasted just like berry yoghurt - mainly the cream cheese mousse/yoghurt combination. 🆕 Seasonal special ($20.5) I love this bingsu on their menu as it utilises seasonal produce, it's always changing too! On my visit it was fresh persimmon with persimmon jam, honey cream cheese, and salted crumbles. If you're not in the mood for shaved ice, they also have a selection of cakes (e.g. hojicha basque cheesecake, strawberry shortcake, baked cheesecake). These are available in individual size and full size (preorder) - perfect for celebrations! The teddy bear cake ($13.5) had decadent chocolate cream and mandarin jelly on top of a flourless chocolate brownie base.

The injeolmi toast was a nice combination of warm and cold, savoury and sweet. It had rice cake in between the two pieces of toast, with some syrup and condensed milk over it and injeolmi ice cream on top. It was definitely unique and delicious but it was a bit on the sweet side, not exactly something I would order again unless I'm craving something sweet. The watermelon shaved ice is a seasonal one. It had rose and lychee flavors in it too, but I didn't like it the combination of flavors and it tasted quite odd. The portion size is good though, small enough so it's not too much but big enough for a few to share. I think if we had ordered a different flavor it might have been better. The service was pretty slow because there were about 6 other customers at the time but only two workers between taking orders and preparing the food. Would have been be better if they had more workers so that service could be quicker. The environment wasn't amazing, compared to a place like Sulbing, because it was quite hidden away and dim. I might come back again if I'm craving the injeolmi toast, but would probably go somewhere else to eat shaved ice.
