Update 8th Apr 2024 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Last time we stepped into Supernormal, it was like diving into a pool of joy, so we made sure to plan ahead and secure a spot for our out-of-town pals. And let me tell you, Supernormal didn't just meet expectations; it threw a party for our taste buds! Here's what we ordered: 1. New England lobster roll 2. Duck bao 3. A whole flounder swimming in burnt butter dashi and shaved kombu 4. Gippsland striploin with roasted kimchi & spring onion (half size but full on flavor!) 5. Peanut butter parfait dancing with salted caramel and soft chocolate 6. Japanese whisk three milk cake, a dessert fit for dessert royalty My personal favorites? Well, let's just say the duck bao, peanut butter parfait, and three milk cake are like old friends I can't help but visit every time. And don't get me started on that flounder – the burnt butter dashi had me licking the plate! Our out-of-town buddies? They gave Supernormal a double thumbs-up and already started planning their return trip. Looks like we've found their new favorite spot in town! 2023 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We (party of two) were organized enough to book to dine i at Supernormal this time as we had walked in a few times without booking and was told the wait time would be 90 min +. Extremely happy with our dining experience with delectable food, great ambience and 5/5 customer service. We ordered 1. Kingfish, mandarin dashi, pink daikon; 2. Korean rice cakes, sweet chili, sesame (5*, this was so delicious, the rice cakes were either pan fried or deep fried to give it the super crispy texture, coupled with the sauce, just amazing); 3. Hunan-style beef tartare, fragrant chili oil (5*, this came with a cracker and was absolutely a delight to have the beef tartare with the cracker); 4. Twice-cooked duck bao with vinegar & plum sauce (5+*, to us this was the highlight of all the dishes; very flavorful and crispy and the baos are fluffy, coupled with the plum sauce, it’s a match made in heaven); 5. Slow-cooked lamb shoulder, eggplant (5*,even though both of us did not usually eat lamb, we still really enjoy eating this dish as the sauce was just delish: it also came with a bowl of cabbage and was a lovely complement); 6. Peanut butter parfait, salted caramel & soft chocolate ( 5+*, another must have dish to us). The server was super fantastic and knowledgeable too, he suggested to go half servings for the Korean rice cakes and lamb shoulders, otherwise there might be too much food for the two of us. We did listen and he was absolutely right (we were still super full even at half servings 😇).

At 2pm on a Sunday, Supernormal was busy, filled with a bustling crowd of well-dressed theatre-goers, and more casual visitors like families and couples. From the door, we were quickly seated at the bar, lit by small lamps and a good view of the kitchen and the bar. We had an easy-going, friendly server who was quick to fill up our water at every instance. He was attentive and patient as we rifled our way through the food and drinks menus. Service from all the staff was respectful and well-paced throughout the meal. We opted for food outside of the banquet. For our first course, we went for the "kingfish, mandarin dashi, pink daikon". The fish was very light with just the right amount of acidity and sweetness from the dashi. We also had the "tuna, kombu, pickled shallot", and that kombu is something we'll dream about for days; its umami flavour was other-worldly and we would have scooped it into our mouths if we could! We also had the "marinated clams, Shaoxing wine, daikon", and again, the sauce was sweet, going well with the fresh saltiness of the clams. Next up was the New England lobster roll. Surprisingly, it didn't quite meet our expectations and tasted plain but the shellfish with the soft roll was very pleasing anyway. We then had the "duck bao - twice cooked duck leg, vinegar, and plum sauce", which had an exceptional, thin crust all around instead of plain duck skin. The meat itself easily left the bone. Pulling it all together was soft, cloud-like bao. Again, this didn't impress as much but it was nonetheless good. The last course was "wok-friend green Chinese broccoli & cabbage" and "roasted flathead, burnt butter dashi". Both dishes were a revelation together. The vegetables were wonderfully charred from the wok, giving it that smoky, nearly meaty flavour. For the fish, it was the burnt butter dashi that blew us away! When poured onto what I suspect was stringy, dried seaweed and paired with a mouthful of well-cooked the fish, it was divine. We would readily come back for that! The one great impression from all the dishes we had is that Supernormal's food had exceptional sauces for a variety of dishes across the different Asian cuisines --from the raw tuna's kombu sauce, to the clams' Shaoxing wine sauce, all the way to the burnt butter dashi. It was also underwhelming in some places, especially since we're used to more specialized restaurants that do certain dishes better. Bustling with guests amongst great décor, Supernormal is a good place for a catch up over Asian dishes done differently, good drinks, and the service of amazing staff.

The Short Version - Great (/amazingly great) food with attentive service. You need to eat here. The Long Version. Us - Family of 4 (15- & 10-year olds - both adventuous with food) When - 4pm on a Sunday, prior to a 6:30pm show Food - With differing tastes, we didn't choose the banquet. All up we probably spent a similar amount. We ordered the following: - Flat bread - Epic. The shio koji brought with it a massive kick of flavour. We only had one but could have ordered these all day long. - Potstickers (pictured) - Good solid dish, with delicate presentation. - Fremantle octopus - Marinated well, with a bright kick from the chilli. - Lobster Rolls - Probably the only "it's okay" dishes of the meal. It was perfectly okay, but against the rest of the field, was an also-ran in this competition. - Duck Bao (pictured) - One of those dishes that, like the flat bread earlier, you just wanted more of. The outerskin was super crispy, but hid the suculent duck meat within. - Waggu Beef (pictured) with wok fried greens & rice on the side - "The main" - Meet excellently cooked and seasoned, which was well balanced with the greens. Peanut Butter Parfait (pictured) - Awesome attention to detail with presentation. Nice combo of sweet and savoury & a great way to finish the meal off. Drinks - An extensively, extentsive wine list. Not overly cheap, but there's something for all budgets and tastes here. I was hoping for a long japan/others imported beer list, but no luck. Atmosphere - We were seated near the windows so could see the whole resturant. It's not the most silent of places with exposed concrete everywhere, so be ready for that. Service - I didn't catch the name of the server, but they knew the menu in an out, happy to offer guidance & was never far away - but also wasn't standing over the table. 10/10. Other - I would always book, especially if there's only 2 of you and you don't want to be seated at the bar.

I last visited Supernormal in 2021 and have previously had such amazing experiences that I literally tell everyone if there's one restaurant they must visit in Melbourne, it's this one. But after returning myself, I was a bit disappointed! We ordered the Banquet Menu 2 at $120pp. This is about the same price as last time and should probably have been an early warning sign that other aspects of the experience must have dropped to keep the price so consistent. When it came to the food, the flavours were certainly good but the serving sizes were all off. I have visited and had the banquet in groups of various sizes, as small as 1 person to this visit with 3. Whilst some of the items were clearly catered to number of guests, there were others where the serving size was the same as I received when dining alone! This was particularly evident with items like the flatbread and the side vegetables/salad. Given the banquet is charged per person I think they need some consistency here. As for service, it started strong but went downhill. They have clearly become more popular and I got the feeling they try to get people in and out as quickly as possible, one effect of this was that the cocktail of one person on our table was taken away when there were still a few sips left. After we raised it (not in a negative way, more just as an FYI) there was a noticeable downturn in service, with our original server avoiding our table and being replaced by others just coming by to drop off food and go. On my previous visits, Supernormal had perfected that boutique, casual yet refined vibe, with great food and service to match. This time things felt impersonal and rushed, almost a competition to get through as many tables as possible in the night. A victim of their own success perhaps? I miss the old Supernormal and hope they can get back to what they used to be.

Honestly if you’re considering coming here, it’s likely you already know of Supernormal’s reputation - and if you don’t, you’ll certainly be singing it’s praises by the time you’ve paid a visit. The food is honestly fantastic. There’s frankly no other word for it. With a massively varied menu, with items taking influence from all over the world, there’s something for everyone and no wrong choice. Despite ordering 5-6 different menu items (and drinks), everything came out in good time with appropriately timed staggering between entrees, mains and desserts. The drink menu was extensive (though a couple more cocktail options may not have gone astray!), and everything ordered was delicious and well presented. Admittedly, it’s priced quite highly - but once you’ve had your first bite (or sip!) you’ll see why. Everything is so fresh and meticulously crafted, that it’s clear it’s worth every dollar. While we sat a table booth, the counter seating also looked like a great option, being so close to the action and seeing everything being put together by the chefs would have been an absolute treat and something I look forwards to trying next visit. The service was efficient and easy to grab their attention, with all members being happy to make suggestions and explain any menu items, and even have a little chat if you’re so inclined. Overall, an easy 5 stars. 10/10. However you want to say it, Supernormal undersells itself with its name - this place is anything but normal, and all the better for it! As a final note - be sure the grab the Cookbook, as once you try the food there you’ll know without a doubt that you’ll be wanting a little taste of those magnificent recipes at home, even in between visits!
