Ootoyo Japanese sushi bar is located along harbour drive shopping mall. It’s the only restaurant and shop that’s opened in the evening. For walk-in, you can easily get a table either inside or outside, while everyone else is ordering takeaway and picking up. There’s absolutely no atmosphere at all, we were the only customers in the restaurant at 6pm and there’s nothing else opened nearby. Ootoyo offered complimentary miso soup 🍜 as soon as we sat down but they forgot to bring them out until we reminded them 👎. The food is excellent and the portion is very generous 👍🏻 especially the amount of meat you get in a bento box. Both bugogi and chicken teriyaki bento box 🍱 were delicious and it comes with leaf salad in yuzu dressing, a few pieces of sashimi salmon 🍣, two pieces of sushi and a bowl of rice. Overall both the quality and quantity of food is good. We were let down on the service as we were the only occupied table but they focused more on getting takeout orders first rather than dine in customers otherwise great...
Read moreWe ordered three gluten free dishes and asked if the ginger and wasabi were gluten free, we were told they aren't gluten free so we asked to leave them off as my wife is highly allergic to wheat!
When our food arrived the plate had wasabi and ginger on it so we asked again if it was gluten free. The girl said oh sorry and went to wipe the ginger off with her hand so I asked for a fresh batch mentioning again that my wife has food allergies.
The took the food into the kitchen and put the same sushi on a new plate, for people with allergies this can be enough to trigger a reaction as cross contamination can occur.
More training is needed for your staff. Please train them in dealing with allergies and also how to fill cups of water as we only received one small cup of water, my wife even pulled her own water bottle out and filled both our cups and they didn't come over with more water.
On quiet Tuesday night, it was extremely disappointing! Week won't...
Read moreOotoya restaurant is a great place to eat with an extensive menu. The owners, Tony (FoH), TJ (Sushi Chef) and Kim (Hot Food Chef) are super friendly and know exactly what they are doing when it comes to running the business!
The food is always fresh and tasty, service is friendly and efficient and the atmosphere is always relaxed. Its in a great location in Coffs CBD and makes it easy to drop in for lunch or an evening meal. The restaurant also benefits from serving a few Korean style dishes which really gives it an edge if you want to try something a little different.
The only things stopping me from giving a 5* review are that it currently operates on a BYO system for alcohol (which isn't a major thing, and they are currently in the process of acquiring a license to serve on the premises. The second being I am a massive Ramen fan and feel their options in this area are limited to a few options.
Well worth a visit if you live in the Coffs...
