Amazing and delicious authentic chinese food here. They're all about "sha pot" a dish similar to hot pot or pho, less like a soup though and it compromises of multiple elements. The sha pots come in variety of flavour combinations of meats, vegetables, toppings and delicious rice noodle!

For entree I had the pork chips which were to die for, texture crunchy, the green peppercorns provided a unique flavour sensation and the pork was succulent. I then had the tender fish slices with tomato rice noodle in sha pot. The fish was deliciously tender, the noodles absorbed all the flavour of the tomato broth. The addition of mushrooms and other vegetables added a nice textural change to accompany the tender fish, loved everything about it!

For dessert I tried the mango sago and deep fried rice cake. The mango sago was really refreshing as it was lightly sweetened. The rice cakes' crunchy texture but gelatinous inside was Moorish.

Do check this place out, you won't be disappointed we're very lucky here in newcastle to have a unique beautiful chinese restaurant that celebrates some of their authentic dishes and flavours. Also prices are...

Popped in for lunch @MrRiceDarby for some Szechuan cuisine which means spicy even if there isn't a chilli next to the menu item! There's an extensive al a carte menu and there's also lunch specials which I opted for.

Braised Beef and Bamboo with rice and soup - this is certainly spicy, flavoursome sauce, succulent beef, tender bamboo and rice to balance the heat and flavours. The sweetcorn soup is yum and the meal is very filling and excellent value.

Of course I can't leave without dessert and got the deep fried rice cakes in a molasses like deep brown syrup for takeaway. These are slightly crunchy on the outside, chewy in the middle a bit like mochi. The syrup adds just a touch of sweetness. Very tasty. Lovely warm inviting ambience and friendly service.

The food was excellent but the service was not good. We had a number of excellent vegetable dishes including Eggplant with Green Beans and Stir Fried Seasonal Vegetables. I enjoyed the Father. Heist as favourite which was sweet and sour pork served in ice. This is dish that should be eaten quickly as the ice makes the outside of the batter very crisp while the inside is still warm. So to the service. We were a large party, so perhaps that contributed to the problem. As we started eating the waitress knocked over a glass of wine not only flooding the table but also breaking the glass. Sitting at the end of the table, I got a lap full of white wine. The waitress supplied paper napkins but we had to do most of the cleaning up ourselves. When paying the bill I queried the fact that we had been given not discount for the wasted glass of wine. We got a small discount of four dollars on a bill of of more than...

What a delightful restaurant! We walked along Darby street which is very nice, and found this restaurant looking so inviting. We ordered dumpling, sweet and sour pork, vegetable and Szechuan chicken. All of them were so nice and in particular we ordered Szechuan chicken by this lovely serving lady's recommendation and I am glad we did. I can confidently say that this was the best Szechuan chicken I have had a very long time. The serving was very helpful and engaging. She also told us that the dumplings we ordered were made by her own hands. And she learned from her mother which reminded me of my own family. We live near Nelson bay, when we come back to Newcastle, we will visit again. Thank you

Given the rave reviews I’ve read recently, I thought we’d try Mr Rice on a Monday night. The food was really tasty but the service was extremely disappointing. We booked a table and was seated upstairs. It was extremely noisy so we asked to sit outside. Put it simply our waiter forgot about us and when we ordered a second round of dumplings we waited and waited. He’d forgotten our order so we checked and he told us the dumplings would be coming out shortly and that was another 30 mins wait. Seriously don’t go to Mr Rice if you’re expecting good service. Being told that “the kitchen is understaffed and we’re so sorry” is just insane when the restaurant was empty of customers at 8.30pm.
