Hot Tamale is well known in Darwin and for a good reason: they have excellent food and delicious cocktails (and they produce some of the finest bartenders in the NT). We got the Street Food Platter which was a mountain of food for $70, price sounds a little steep but it is worth every penny. Every dish was delicious and made from high quality ingredients. There was more than enough food for 2 hungry adults. We enjoyed getting to taste the highlights of the menu. Of course, the drinks are also superb. There's a large patio right on the waterfront, plenty of seating even on weekends. Staff were very clear about when they were closing and allowed everyone more than enough opportunity to order their last drinks/food. Fantastic atmosphere, great service, amazing food and tasty cocktails - they have it all.

I was so excited to try this place, as it seemed really cool! We arrived quite early, at 5:30pm last Monday to take advantage of the happy hour, the restaurant was still relatively empty and we were immediately seated by a young waiter, who didn't even give us the chance to look at the menu and wanted already to take our order. When we told him we needed a couple of minutes, he left and NEVER looked at us again, so did every other member of the staff that just kept ignoring our signals. After 10 minutes we went and asked to order ourselves (again, the restaurant wasn't that busy yet), we ordered two margaritas and guacamole as entrees, we still were unsure about ordering dinner because of the service, so we said we might order more later. Our chips and Guacamole arrived almost immediately, to our surprise! Maybe it wasn't all lost and this place was actually worth staying for dinner! All this quickly vanished when we realised that our drinks were not coming any time soon. After 10 more minutes of waiving to the staff, who was clearly ignoring us, we managed to get someone who apologised for the mix up and brought our drinks, 40 minutes after we ordered them! No need to say we didn't stay for dinner. Worst service I have ever experienced in my life, I would have given 1 star, but the margaritas were quite good. Just do not bother!

We got the Mole Coloradito con Pollo, and Nachos de Chorizo. The food was actually excellent. However, the service was appalling. Had to raise my hand to get the waiters’ attention for minutes, yet no one came to our table. A waiter was just standing around talking to another worker, and not even paying attention to the customers. Towards the middle of our meal, the same guy was just walking around looking at the ceiling, not serving anyone. I feel bad for the rest of the staff who were actually working. Despite the good food, the poor service significantly reduced the rating of this establishment. More training needs to be given to the staff. EDIT: Went there for a second meal. The food was way too salty. Reduced from 3 stars to 2 due to lack of consistency.

Popped in this evening for a light dinner and was pleasantly surprised, particularly given the mixed reviews on Google Maps. I had a selection of taco and two margaritas, all lovely. Chicken and fish tacos were the picks for me. Had a seasonal margaritas and a regular margaritas; certainly would have had more but it wasn’t a school night! Views back over the waterfront are a standout feature, as was the fit-out which just added to the general ambiance. Service was ok. Not a big complaint, but felt sitting down was almost a payoff…. Here is the QR code, we don’t do table service… just seems a little impersonal. That said the food and drinks were delivered promptly. Would certainly come here again, a recommend from me!

Fab atmosphere, was really nice to sit outside- great decor and some great music on in the background. The food was delicious, slightly expensive and the portions weren’t huge. I had the vegetarian burrito bowl, was so delicious. The jalapeño poppers weren’t spicy enough. The kids nachos were great, although only doing kids meals for under 10’s was strange as we then had to buy an adult meal for our 12 year old. We bought a jug of home made soda for $18 and it only gave us 3 glasses! This was strange as individual glasses were $5. This unfortunately was a huge rip off.

We absolutely loved our meal at Hot Tamale. My hubby questioned my choice of Mexican restaurant, but once our food arrived he realised just how amazing it was !! The corn ribs are to die for and the fish tacos were our absolute favourite. Staff were friendly and helpful, service a little slow, but that’s ok as we were FaceTiming our kids back in Brisbane so we were kind of distracted anyways ! The atmosphere is brilliant, loads of tables for both large groups or more personal tables or bench seating is also available. We really enjoyed our experience here.
