Port Douglas is our annual holiday destination and has been for years with the Surfie being our go to place to eat.....until now.
As always we walked off the beach around lunch time to reserve a table for dinner only to be told by the a young girl that "we are fully booked tonight and for the whole week". Checked the online portal to find plenty of times available for the week? Brushed it off as maybe people had cancelled that she didn't know about and couldn't be bothered checking. We selected our time and looked forward to a family dinner. Went up to order, tried to make friendly small talk with the lady taking orders (senior to the other front of house staff and seemed to be management) which was an effort and again brushed this off as maybe she's too busy to talk? Thank God we ordered some entrees as the three main meals took over an hour to come out!! Meals finally arrived with attitude. Same young girl who told us they were booked out all week thought it would be okay to dump our meals wherever she wanted to!! She was quickly corrected on who's meal was who's. Busy or not it takes 5 seconds to ask who ordered what? Can't fault the delicious food, however the fish tacos (my wife's go to dish) is now $5 dollars dearer and only two tacos instead of three. We understand cost increase, we don't expect this to reflect portion decrease. This now makes a main meal teeter on the edge of being an entree.
One patron who all diners felt terribly sorry for who returned to her table crying!! was dining with her elderly parents, she had clearly approached said senior staff lady to enquire about the wait time on their meals. Obviously had been waiting longer than us. This turned into a publicly displayed altercation between her and senior staff lady with the patron terribly upset, still crying and yelling about how rude the staff member was to her. So so awkward for all dining and at this point we were ready to cancel our meals and try to figure out something else for dinner like this Lady and her elderly parents had to.
We as a family brushed off one too many faults with this new style of Surfie for our liking and along with many other diners will not return 😞
Hopefully the original bubbly, chilled out staff return for future patrons to get a glimpse of what a surf club...
Read moreWe arrived for our 6:00 booking, ordered some 10-15 minutes after, and our food arrived at 7:50. How did this happen? Well, the simple answer is our table was entirely forgotten.
We knew it was busy, but a table next to us with more seats that had arrived half an hour later than us and had the food within fifty minutes. Sure enough, when our member asked what was happening, the staff had conveniently stated that our order had 'just been processed' and was sure to arrive soon. Another member of staff had come out to the table and offer us something, once all our table members were back. She never returned. After an excruciating amount of plates had been moved from the kitchen, finally our four-person table had gotten their food.
Now we only needed to battle with the lukewarm food, three out of four of the plates, and the frankly unappealing mood of weariness and exasperation that had blanketed over the table. I left quickly after I had finished, with nothing so much as an apology from any members of staff. Another member of my party gave feedback, which the staff tried to offer a round of drinks or snacks- but we had already finished. We just wanted to go home. Just under two hours of waiting to be completely forgotten about, treated like it was a simple ten minute delay, and then somehow being forgotten again when the staff said they would offer us something.
I'm tired, my party is put out, and the extra snacks and drinks we bought to try and satiate anything sting in a particularly nasty way. Very bad experience which I would not recommend to anyone looking for a...
Read moreReading the reviews online it was hard to get a decent idea of what this place was like with people both loving it and hating it. . We were told that everywhere is very busy and if you don’t book in advance you don’t eat. So we took a chance. This is a Surf club so we we were not expecting haute cuisine. The staff were lovely. All Irish and very helpful. We were 5 and ordered the garlic bread, ciabata which came toasted to within an inch of its life with almost frozen truffle butter which was unspreadable, a couple of fish and chips, linguine, steak sandwich and the burger special. The place is very rustic seating is outdoor but covered. We ordered the steak sandwich without the aioli and we were told we got the last burger it was only 6:30 PM! The food, when it came was thrown on the plate without any care. The chips were soggy and cold, the pasta was very average and swimming in sauce and the steak sandwich never arrived. We told the waitress and was assured it was on way. It finally arrived when everyone else had finished smothered in very garlicky aioli. Bearing in mind we spent $190 on food and another $60 on drinks this was a very expensive night out for a totally below average experience. Would we go back - no, it was very disappointing and for value for money there is definitely...
