I purchased a Nice looking scallop pie and one I was looking forward to eating . I went off to a bench down the street to eat it . I lifted the pie up out of the aluminium disposable pie dish to notice the top pastry was cooked and the bottom was completely raw , so raw it was inedible. I took it back to the shop, feeling the need to make a point for the public consumers benefit , I handed it to the lady and just said ‘ the pastry on the bottom of this pie is not cooked it is RAW , I do not want it . I turned to go , just as I was by the door she said do you want your money back ? I said ‘NO’, and walked out. ( quite profoundly noted was that no apology was offered , I guess she might have been dumb struck!) I have a point to make here by not accepting my money back. This is a genuine complaint , not a whimsical one because I changed my mind. My question is if in the baking of that pie , did the filling get to make it to the required temperature that seafood filling needs to reach before it is safe to eat ? Go google what temperature that needs to be please ! My other point is why are the staff not trained to check up on the uneven cooking of the pies before selling them to the public? Do you use a temperature probe to check if they reach the correct temperature? Are you placing too many pies in your oven at a time and not checking them adequately by rotating them? Thinking if the top is cooked , so must the bottom also be ? No I do not want my $9 back , I want you to understand that it is very important for public health reasons that food safety practice is of paramount importance when selling edible items. Please do the right thing by your business and check your products before selling them to the public ,not only are you selling improperly prepared food for a substantial amount of money , you are creating a possible food poisoning scenario ??? I am sure you do not want anyone to get sick , I do not want to get sick either. Now ladies , i know aluminium casings covers the base of the pies and you did not notice the raw pastry bottoms because of this , the lesson here is never assume that because the top pastry of a pie is cooked so is the bottom . Can you do this in future please ? I am a qualified chef and pie maker of thousands in my career , it is not difficult to get right. As well , you might need to know that when you put very chilled filling in the pastry shells the bottoms are likely to not cook as evenly...
Read moreI hate giving negative reviews but our experience today cannot go without comment. We came here 2 years ago and had an excellent lunch and dining experience hence our initial 5 star review. We looked forward to a repeat today but sadly we were bitterly dissapointed with our visit. The famous Scallop pie should be renamed crab stick pie with a hint of scallop. The pie was bland, had about half a crab stick, ONE scallop and filled with a tasteless creamy sauce. The pie crust looked good but the base was arguably under cooked, a comment i later saw from a number of other reviews.
My wifes fetta roll was ok and on a positive note the apple slice was excellent. The coffee was delivered in paper cups despite me saying clearly that we were seated outside for lunch. If we are paying over $30 for a pie and coffee lunch we would expect better than cardboard cups and plates. My wife went inside to ask for sugar and the staff member begrudgingly gave her 3 sachets of sugar and said quite tersely that "you should have asked for sugar when you ordered your coffee". As tourists to your town please forgive us for not knowing the "local rule". We travel extensivly throughout Victoria and would say that 99% of similar establishments would have sugar on the counter, on the table or ask at time of order.
No napkins provided and no table water available completed our dissappointing visit.
If the owners are ever in Ocean Grove or Queenscliffe please visit Rolling Pin and see how to run a similar bakery operation.
Fortunately for us there are plenty of other eateries in Port Fairy and we will not be eating here again...
Read moreBusy little bakery, which is always a good sign. Unfortunately though I have to say I was left disappointed. Now I feel the need to state that I'm born and breed from Tassie, which we know has the best scallop pies and currently live close to a Country Cob Bakery, which have some of the best seafood pies going round. So I have been spoilt. So, of course, when I saw the "famous scallop pie" sign I was all in. What could be better than a fresh scallop pie right by the sea?? Sadly, not this one. Very bland sauce with few scallops and some seafood extender and an under cooked pastry bottom. Up side though, chocolate...
