My experience at little shack cafe was horrible. Myself and my friend ordered coffee and breakfast. We paid separately and both received a buzzer number. After my friends meal came, she then finished it and I had still not received mine, I went to the counter and asked politely if they had forgotten my order. They then told me the machine had broken and they missed my order and I needed to pay and re-order (no one had apologised for the inconvenience). I then showed them on my internet banking app that the money had been taken from my account, they said well my order did not go through to there computer so it should automatically go back into my account, I then asked for them to print me the error receipt from the eftpos machine to prove to me that they hadn’t received my money, they were unable to do that because the machine was not working, they then said I would have to re - order and pay, but this time my friend had completely finished her meal, so I said no I won’t re-order can I please have a refund, they refused and told me to message them on Facebook tomorrow if I had not received money back. I must say that is very unprofessional, they should have Atleast apologised for me and my daughter waiting 45 minutes from a meal that they gave us a buzzer for but never came and seen us to say our order did not go through the terminal, if the machine was broken they should have apologised and asked for my name and number to follow up with me later on throughout the day to ensure the ‘money automatically goes back into my account.’ I completely understand IT issues happen, but the customer service was the issue in the instance, and the fact the staff member was rude and just wanted to argue her point rather then satisfying the customer. I will NOT be back, nor will my friend and other people who...

There’s something disorienting about sitting on the edge of the Hastings River, watching boats drift by like lazy thoughts, and feeling like you’ve somehow woken up in the Caribbean. “Little Shack” — a name so unassuming it might undersell itself — is a weathered beach bar in disguise. You half expect Bob Marley to start playing and someone to offer you a joint with your margarita.

But this is Port Macquarie, not Jamaica. And while the setting whispers of escapism, the reality is more “local surf club energy with a twist of lime.”

We came for lunch. Two long blacks and two crispy squid salads. The coffee — Will & Co beans — should’ve been a hit. They’ve delivered gold before. But good beans don’t guarantee a religious experience. It’s like giving a Les Paul to someone who only knows three chords. Paper cups didn’t help. Real coffee deserves ceramics. It’s a simple act of respect.

You order at the bar. Your buzzer buzzes like a cheap motel toothbrush. I jump up like I’m in a food court at an airport. This isn’t a deal-breaker, but it jars against the palm-tree postcard backdrop. You feel a tension between dream and delivery.

And then—redemption. The squid salad. Crispy, tender, unapologetically fresh. Rocket, citrus, slices of apple, a dressing that knew when to speak and when to shut up. A side of mayo that didn’t feel like a cry for help. It all worked. Except… it was served in takeaway bowls with wooden cutlery. Eating something this good with the tools of a 10-year-old’s birthday party is like watching Coltrane on a plastic recorder.

Still, there’s something charming about it all. Messy. Beautiful. A little confused. Just like travel. Just like life.

Would I come back? Absolutely. Would I bring my own...

Hidden Gem Alert: Little Shack is a Must-Visit!

Okay, so I recently stumbled upon this seriously cool spot called Little Shack, and let me tell you, it's the bomb dot com! This place has got it all - killer piccolo coffee, the most mouthwatering coconut and mango muffin, and views that'll make your Instagram followers green with envy. Seriously, the Hastings river and break wall provide the perfect backdrop for your brunch pics.

Now, let's talk vibes. Little Shack has this super chill ambiance that just makes you want to kick back and forget about the world for a while. The rustic décor gives it that cozy, hipster vibe, and the sound of the river flowing nearby adds a touch of serenity. Plus, there's plenty of seating, so you won't have to fight for a spot to enjoy your brekkie.

But let's get to the real reason we're all here - the food and drinks. The piccolo coffee at Little Shack is legit the best I've ever had. It's like a little cup of heaven, with the perfect balance of boldness and smoothness. And don't even get me started on the coconut and mango muffin. It's like a tropical party in your mouth, bursting with fresh flavors that'll transport you to a beachside paradise.

So, if you're looking for the ultimate breakfast or brunch spot, do yourself a favor and check out Little Shack. It's got everything you need for a killer morning - amazing coffee, mouthwatering treats, stunning views, and a vibe that'll make you want to stay all day. Trust me, you won't be...

(3.5 stars) When the restaurant at Rydges Port Macquarie couldn’t make a barista coffee before 7am (despite claiming they open at 6.30am) we ventured just beyond the property to Little Shack. With the feel of an island bar, this indoor-outdoor space wraps itself around a salt and wind tolerant Norfolk Island pine (rather than a coconut palm). Windbreaks make it winter-friendly, with festooned fairy lights beating the early morning gloom. Facing onto the Port Hasting River, it comes into full sun later in the day. Barista-made Will & Co coffees ($5.50/regular) were no problem here. The chilli mushroom burrito ($18) revolves around tasty sautéed buttered mushrooms. There’s also creamy scrambled eggs, a hash brown for body, and smoked tomato chutney for some tang, plus a pot of guacamole I didn’t touch. While you do have to ask rather than see gluten-free options marked on the menu, my dining companion felt catered to with bacon and egg tacos ($17.50/2). Loaded with scrambled eggs, Bangalow bacon and charred chorizo, and lashed with chipotle aioli, they’re a decent protein hit. It was only let down (like my own breakfast) by oxidised pots of pre-prepared guacamole.
