As I stepped through the doors of McGinty’s, in the warm and distant lands of Cairns, I was met not by the clang of modernity, but by something far more enduring: the gentle hum of home.
There is, within these walls, a spirit—not merely poured from the bottle but drawn from the deep well of Irishness that transcends geography. The ambience is unmistakably Irish: wood worn smooth by stories, music that lifts the heart, and laughter that fills the room as naturally as breath fills the lungs.
The atmosphere—ah, it is not constructed, but cultivated. It is the kind of place where a stranger might walk in and leave as a familiar, where songs are sung not to impress, but to express. You feel it in the clink of a glass, in the nod from a barman, in the echo of a well-timed joke across the counter.
McGinty’s possesses that rare and noble quality: authenticity. It does not shout its Irishness—it simply is. From the timbre of the traditional tunes to the warmth of the welcome, it holds true to a lineage of Irish gathering places that stretch back to the hearths of our villages and towns.
To the proprietors, and to the staff: mo bhuíochas libh. You have not merely built a bar—you have kindled a little piece of Ireland in the tropics, and kept the flame dancing with grace and good humour.
To those in Cairns and beyond: if ever your soul longs for Ireland—or if you simply seek a place of good cheer, honest drink, and shared humanity—then...
Read moreProbably my favourite Irish pub in Australia - and I have tried many of them. You get the feel that you are a local, even if it is your first visit there. Paddy and Helen are excellent hosts and all of the bar staff are both friendly and professional. Their turnover is such that the Guinness is always fresh and cold. The locals are a friendly bunch and host their own small but welcoming and challenging trivia quiz on Saturday afternoon. Bragging rights (I haven’t yet to earn them yet) are more valuable than the possible free drink. From 4pm each Sunday you will get to enjoy some traditional music and the occasional song. Food is limited to that purchased in a packet. The bar has got a surprisingly good collection of drinks, with a pleasing collection of Irish Wiskeys. Never empty nor overly crowded - it feels like...
Read moreVery friendly establishment and always attract a good crowed. I was shocked to see there was no food served but was very pleased to see this establishment had set up a partnership with the restaurants to their side to offer fold to their customers. Only needing to go next door and pay then have your food delivered to you for table in the bar was fantastic! Great atmosphere and for only $8.30 for a pint of Guinness was a bargain! Being a paddy myself, this little pub offers a real home away from home! Staff is always friendly, bubbly and very well trained. I would highly recommend this little bar for a great night filled with live music and great...
