Came in for a drink Friday night with work colleagues and it was late, well for me at least. We’d been downtown for dinner, went to another bar for some drinks and then returned to the hotel we’d dined at earlier.
I’m from Lismore, 63 years of age and couldn’t get in due to not having my licence on me and thus, no entry.
So we did what more people should do and made our way to The Portadown Hotel. Even with karaoke, it was still quiet and we set up shop right at the bar, something I haven’t done in quite a spell. A couple Henry Hunters later, we were off to our apartments, but not before having the pleasure of Anthony’s company.
The highlight was when, as only a good publican knows how to do, he inserted himself into our conversation on Socialist Agrarianism enthusiastically proclaiming “not enough people here share my love of Socialist Agrarianism”, thumb firmly planted in cheek.
Our group of three would return Saturday night and stayed a while longer, not even bothering to contend with what lay in Margaret Street. Because we knew it wouldn’t hold a candle to our new home away from home, up the road.
So thank you Anthony, from myself, John and Casey. Thank you for restoring my faith in pubs in Toowoomba and looking forward to returning in the not too...
Read moreSay you've got a Friday night with the boys (or the girls) and you're not sure what to do. It's too much to go to a place that is full on hectic, but you still wanna have some fun. Well, me and the boys were in this conundrum and the Portadown Hotel on the corner of Neil and Herris street provided the solution! As refined gentlemen, we love a smashing game of billiards and the Portadown Hotel offers a very fine pool table that can be played at NO expense (in other words, it's free!). The bar tender, who I wish I knew the name of, was extremely friendly and made sure that we had a fantabulous time. I love me some Lemon Lime Bitters, and the drink I received was very enjoyable, the best I've ever had in the Garden City. If you're a fan of the glorious age that is 80's hits, you will love what the Portadown Hotel has to offer to your ears. Not to mention the cleanliness of the place made for a pleasant atmosphere. Did I mention the pool table is free? Because it is! So, if you're ever looking for an enjoyable night on the town, come on down to the...
Read moreDropped by with the kids after doing a spot of retail therapy across the carpark at First Choice. The kids were, as is the case with three boys, starving to death. Enquired about lunch and was told by Anthony, the manager, that they didn't have a kitchen but that we were more than welcome to order a feed and have it delivered. How good is that? Really good! So often, especially with the boys, you can go to a pub and the food is pretty pricey or some cases simply not up to scratch. We ordered KFC and while we waited for lunch to arrive, had a few games of pool and keno too. It's really such a lovely pub inside, it's just a shame that the outside doesn't look that appealing. Anyways, the pub is incredibly neat and tidy, the locals (and bar staff too) are particularly friendly and knowledgeable too. One of the old boys even had a game of pool with my middle son. He thought it was Christmas! Many thanks to Anthony and Tekia for looking after us today, will...
