The Empire — Attraction in Toowoomba City

The Beautiful Empire Theatre has been lovingly restored and extended. It is a wonderful, contemporary venue. Originally built in 1911 as 'Empire Pictures', rebuilt in an art deco style in 1933, following a fire, and finally restored and reopened in 1997. The heritage listed theatre is a building with rich history and fine architecture, including the grand proscenium arch, decorative sconces, original brick walls in the foyers and art-deco style lighting. This building sat idle, dormant and derelict for 26 years before being restored. The precinct now includes the Empire Theatre Studio, the Empire Church Theatre and the Armitage Centre. Went to see Mowtown. The performance was great. Sad that we paid to go to the Empire Theatre as we were told how lovely is it only to be shoved down the back in the smaller theatre as they were not full. When we pay high prices for tickets that say the show is at the Empire theatre, we expect to go there. Don’t push us into another room where the seats were old and hard and very uncomfortable. I watched many older people struggle to get up and move and complain about sore backs sitting in those chairs and so many people voiced how terrible the sound was in that smaller theatre. If you advertise a show for the Empire Theatre, that’s where we expect to go, Very disappointed. Makes me think twice before booking...

I recently visited this theatre with my wife, and we had a pretty good time. The interior was lovely—it had a vintage charm but with a modern touch. If someone tall is sitting in front of you, it might block your view a bit. Also, the food options at the snack bar were limited, which was a bit disappointing.
