Black Star Bakery, makers of the internationally famed Strawberry Watermelon Cake have reopened in a central location in the CBD Galleries. Whilst their flagship store is in Newtown and they have a cafe style space in Rosebery and a store in St Kilda, Victoria, they’ve also been selling their sweet treats through a little spot in Kinokuniya bookshop in the Galleries. Since this was a small spot, only to be found by venturing up a few levels of the building, the move sees it in a larger space in a prime location in the Galleries (Pitt Street Entrance) enabling it to reach more foot traffic. The iconic Strawberry Watermelon Cake is a taste sensation has become a favourite of Australians and also internationally. New York Times declared it the“the world’s most Instagrammed cake” and so popular, Black Star sell over a million slices a year. You must try this for yourself. The cake consists of layers of cream infused with rose water spread between almond dacquoise (nut meringue) and slices of watermelon and topped with strawberries, grapes and rose petals. Originally made for a wedding, it represents romance, which makes sense when you see it. The cake can be bought in single pieces, as well as the full cake). In addition there’s a Pistachio Lemon Zen Cake, Vegan Chocolate Popcorn Cake and Raspberry Lychee Cake, all can be purchased in individual slices. We loved the Raspberry Lychee cake, which has a rich chocolate biscuit base with layers of raspberry marshmallow and rose scented cream, topped with layer of lychees and raspberries. It has lovely textures and flavours which a nice amount of decadence with the chocolate and freshness with the lychees. We also sampled their pistachio zen cake, which sees layers of pistachio ganache, mixed with white chocolate mousse, lemon curd and crunchy pistachio dacquoise resulting in a picture perfect cake with lovely flavours. There’s plain, chocolate and ham-and-cheese croissants; custard flans; and a new addition to the menu, the peanut, chocolate and caramel tart and also a limited edition black-truffle toastie. The store also has a cake-collection area, meaning you can pre-order baked goods online and skip the queue to pick them up. Opening at 8am, they can now also service the city worker with a quality takeaway coffee, using Little Marionette Beans, a brand we love! Whilst it is a small takeaway store, it is a clean and stylish aesthetic with a glass case displaying the cakes and pastries, it’s in a really convenient location and undoubtedly will be popular there.

Got a Chocolate Mirage cake for my birthday. Ordered online, the pickup process is easy, when you show up they direct you to a separate cake pick up counter located directly opposite of the main store, literally right in front of it. You tell your name/order number and they check you off on a list which you then sign that you’re picking up the order. I also bought a cooler bag from them, they put a gel ice pack into the bag to keep the cake cool. They also wrap the cake box in plastic wrap after they open the box and show you the cake. I think this is great and makes transporting the cake home easier, especially if you have to travel a distance. Keeps the cake fresh. I think paying a lil extra for the cooler bag is worth it. The handle placement/design makes it so the cake is held upright, it’s shaped specifically for cake boxes. It’s a neat bag that you can reuse. I couldn’t find many reviews of the Chocolate Mirage cake but wanted to try it. I’m not a fan of dark chocolate, prefer milk chocolate but I thought that the dark chocolate mousse wasn’t bad, it only had a slight bitter taste that you get with dark chocolate. It mixed really well with the light/milk chocolate mousse that was also there. The sweetness balanced out the dark chocolate and I think makes the cake palatable to milk chocolate fans and those who don’t like dark chocolate. I don’t like caramel so the only part of the cake I really didn’t like was the base which was a salted caramel/popcorn layer. Some people might like this, I simply just separated that layer and just ate the mousse/sponge layers. The pickup/customer service was great. I didn’t collect the cake at the pick-up time I chose when I ordered. I received a text message later from the store reminding me that the cake was ready to be collected. I sent a text message back letting them know I was running late and will pick it up in 1 or 2 hours. They replied that it was no problem. Thought that was pretty nice of them, didn’t feel rushed to make it to the store. The CBD branch is on point for online orders, had no issues, they’re doing everything right. I bought the 6 serving size of the Chocolate Mirage cake… it looks small, especially for the price, the 4 serving size would be tiny I think. Think 6 would be the minimum size you want to get. For a rich chocolate cake like the Mirage it’s an okay size for a few people.

I have always been a big fan of blackstars but not until today when I went The Galeries' store to get myself a birthday treat. One of person who was serving was extremely rude and annoying. She rushed my mom in law who was still trying to figure type of cakes where there was no name tag or label on cakes. She kept yelling "next please" more than 5x & looking at us where there no queue behind us. However we didn't stand block the line path as we were aware about that. We didn't get too upset after that but then we had to wait more than 5mins to someone make the coffee. There 7staff behind the counter and everyone was busy chatting and talking and none of them even wondering why me & my families were still standing up in front of the counter and looking at them, until finally the pastry chef called out that there was coffee to be made and done. That cs person quickly made the coffee and left it on the counter. Our coffee came with only a picollo where we actually asked for 3 cappuccinos and a picollo. No one said sorry, or so whatever as courtesy. I understand Blackstar has always been everyone favourite and the shops are always busy. I even enjoyed and sent the cocktails pack for my friends, family and colleague during the covid time. Also always enjoyed the other products whenever I do my grocery in Harris Farm. But after experiencing this bad customer service, I totally changed my mind.
