Read moreAcross the globe – and perhaps the universe – kebabs are a universal street food that proliferate every corner and curb-side where the foot traffic suits the hour and that hour is one in need, either when the mind is trying to overcome intoxication or the belly is beyond and hour of circadian feeding. However preceding every kebab stand, cart or kiosk is a dining table filled out with an entire nation’s cuisine. As students especially, we’d seek out such convenient eats. From my time as a student, I was incredibly lucky to have spots like @erciyes_restaurant , a Sydney institution in Mediterranean cuisine and one of two significant kebab cultures in this city (the other most popular arguably being Lebanese).
Returning to this spot in 2025, over 15 years later, I come baring a big smile on my face. Everything and nothing has changed at the same time. Cleaner window dressing, more spits of juicy meat and an updated grilling station and even a full bar. The vibe is still the same though after all this time; familial and homely, with a sense of pride to represent Turkish cuisine at its most accessible and delicious. The mixed mezze grill and kebab with a side of yalanci dolma (vine leaf wraps) and yoghurt garlic sauce, comes to an incredibly economic $22.50 per head (feeding 4). The pillow-y bread is slightly toastier on the outer edges, with pieces laid under the meat that traditionally are used as sponges to dab the meat of its juices when grilling. These pieces are prized items… think the crunchy rice at the bottom of the pot or crispy bits at the bottom of a KFC bucket.
In 2025 we live within a more adventurous and diverse dining society. Some that have stood the test of time such as Erciyes are finally seeing their dues...
Read moreI’ve tasted Erciyes food in a previous office. We used to order their feast platers for a lunch every time we had functions. Affordable prices, a huge variety of delicious food and big portions. Their website would say 10 people, but we’d serve about 20 staff. Last Sunday I went there with my husband for the first time. The first thing that has captured my attention was their care: my reservation mentioned “not cumin or coriander, please”. I do the same on every restaurant reservation I make. Erciyes has been the very first place where the staff has asked me about allergies. No any other restaurant in Sydney has paid attention to my notes. We’ve started with the small mixed dips and bread. Small, only the name. I highly recommend babaganoush, hummus and beetroot dips. They are heavenly. And their bread? You can eat it alone, for sure! Our main dish was the Mixed Grill. Amazing!!!! And we’ve had a takeaway home. The portion was way too big for only two people. For dessert we’ve had the Chef Special with Turkish coffee (very strong). Wonderful! We have to return for the pides, and falafels, and halloumi and much more food we could not taste! The restaurant is simple, very clean, the staff very attentive and kind. My best recommendation to you is: gather family and friends. The more the merrier. And you will have the chance to try more plates. Well done, Erciyes! You won my heart...
