Thank you as well to Aidie for trying to write a Happy Birthday on the plaque.
My journey with The LAB Baker began with placing an online order (Large Taro Cake), where the process was smooth and convenient, reflecting the bakery's commitment to customer convenience and satisfaction. While my order wasn't quite ready due to the Happy Birthday writing plaque wasn't done when I arrived for pickup, the staff's response was nothing short of exceptional.
Upon realizing the delay, the staff at The LAB Baker immediately offered me drinks or food to enjoy while waiting, demonstrating their commitment to ensuring a positive experience for every customer. Although I was in a rush and had to decline their kind offer, I was truly appreciative of their thoughtful gesture and attentive service.
I also didn't end up getting the writing "Happy Birthday".
Despite the minor hiccup, the staff's professionalism and dedication to customer service shone through. They kept me informed about the status of my order and worked diligently to expedite the process, all while maintaining a friendly and welcoming atmosphere that made me feel valued as a customer. Their genuine passion for their customers and commitment to exceeding customer expectations set a high standard for exceptional service.

For me, Strathfield has been a totally unserviced coffee location for years. Sure the brands have opened up cafes here, but the coffee has always been more American deli bitter, than Sydney cafe delicious.
Having convinced my son to come on a #coffeehunt with me, we found ourselves at @lab_bakerycafe in Strathfield. Running @pabloandrustys as house, this elegantly rustic bakery cafe seems like everything that Strathfield has been missing.
While I am certain that the bread/cake side of things, along with the real juice and iced beverages more than make this place a popular hangout, naturally I only care about the coffee.
Starting with the Porter St blend as a mac, it had strong 90% dark choc bitterness, with mild custard cream breaking through as you drink, though finishing in a strong roasty traditional coffee flavour. Certainly not something that I would order.... unless of course you were in a bakery selling lots of sweet bread/cake options, to balance the coffee experience. So probably a good choice of blend in the long run, aside from the fact that they are also running a single origin (for a #coffeesnob like me).
While the first sip of the Mexican Triunfo Verde was quite bland, with low sweetness, a substantial coco mouthfeel and light medicinal finish, you'd think that the espresso was a write-off. Until you took the second sip and found a fresh cranberry tartness, followed by a strawberry sweetness. Sadly the though slightly bitter medicinal finish remained, but otherwise, a really delicious coffee.
With free WiFi, super comfortable seats, and plenty of room, this seems to be a fantastic cafe to come in, sit down, and chill out with friends. Hopefully there are other cafes like this around...
Read moreI’d like to share my disappointing experience during my recent visit to your Strathfield location.
I ordered an iced latte with oat milk, and when I received the drink, I asked the barista to confirm it was made with oat milk. He replied that I hadn’t ordered oat milk. I explained that I had, but instead of handling the situation professionally, he made a dismissive expression, implying it was my mistake and that I hadn’t paid extra for the oat milk.
When I asked for a refund because it wasn’t the drink I ordered, he reacted as if I was trying to get a free coffee and treated me with clear disrespect. I then asked if he was the owner, and he said he was the manager. His attitude and tone throughout the interaction were condescending and lacked basic customer service courtesy.
The issue originally came from a cashier error, but instead of calmly resolving it, both the barista and cashier insisted I was wrong. I’m a returning customer and have ordered the same drink multiple times without ever needing to check the screen. I clearly said “with oat milk,” and the cashier even nodded at the time.
This situation could have been easily resolved if the manager had simply acknowledged the mistake and remade the drink politely, especially since there weren’t many customers waiting, and I was willing to pay extra for the oat milk or even a new drink. Instead, his attitude escalated the problem and left me feeling unwelcome.
I hope the owner or management reviews this situation seriously, as such behavior drives customers away. Good service is not just about making coffee. it’s about how staff treat customers when a small issue arises.
