I went here with some friends for my birthday and it was probably the best dining experience I have ever had. The ambiance of this place is incredible. They have really nailed the theming, I genuinely thought I was at a Disney park or something, everything inside fits the viking theme. When you open the door, you see this massive longship, and walk down stairs into this dark hall next to the bar. All the restaurant staff are in costume, and there is this deep droning vocalising music which just fits so well. Axes, swords, and meat are hung on the walls. The drinks were excellent, with a massive cocktail menu as well as signature shots. They had to prepare our table for a while, but I was actually pretty happy because we got to spend some time at the bar. Asked the bartender for some recommendations for some cocktails before the meal, and did not disappoint. We all dark mead and beer out of the drinking horns which was just such a cool experience, especially in the ambiance of the restaurant. I love sparkling mead, so I was a huge fan. The food was also excellent. It's quite a small menu, which, in my opinion is a very good call, and the mark of a good restaurant. What they do, they do very well. We ordered everything on the menu with the exception of the fish which they had ran out by the time we got there. Everything was excellent, and due to many allergies in the group they accommodated us very well. I have an anaphylactic allergy, but after talking to the staff, I felt very safe eating there which goes a long way. Some special call outs to the bone marrow entree, which had these fermented mushrooms which were AMAZING, the side potatoes were incredible, and the whole chicken was a crowd favourite. Veggos and Vegans beware. They do have Veggo options, but there is meat everywhere, including hanging from the walls, it is a viking hall after all. If you order the bone marrow, you can do a shot out of the bone afterwards, something my group LOVED, and those who were drinking all needed to partake in. The staff were incredible and nice. They made me feel very special on my birthday, and put up with our rather rowdy crowd of 7 with grace. When your meal comes, they let you select from these massive knives out of this leather knife belt. It's a very nice touch. I cannot stress enough how accommodating they were for our allergies at the table. Giving us gluten free/dairy free options and regular options for everything we ordered. I was just coming off a different restaurant that just straight up served me peanuts despite them telling me there was definitely no nuts in my meal, so I was on edge. They made me feel exceptionally safe about everything I ordered, and that's really impressive. This restaurant will not be for everyone. Its small, meat filled fine dining menu can almost feel at odds with this heavy, and loud viking theming. However it's very much for me. It blew my expectations out of the water, and everything coming together made a perfect night out. I highly recommend this place if the description above seems slightly interesting to you. Everything cumulated into the best dining experience I have ever had, and I will definitely be coming back.

My sweetie is a Dane living in Australia, and has apparently wanted to try Mjolner for a long while. I think we were initially a bit taken aback by the slightly cheesy Viking theme-park feel, but you know, they really lean in and commit to the bit, so it was fun. The restaurant is in a very beautifully fitted out and decorated basement in Redfern (I noticed a stairlift, so it is accessible, hurrah). It looks like a Viking tavern from Hollywood. After being instructed in the ways of Odin by our lovely waitstaff (obviously taken as hostages as they were very much not Scandinavian 🙂), we were served complimentary shots in adorable glasses shaped like penguins. OK, they were glasses shaped like horns, but I was pushing them around the table saying meep meep until they were removed because they look like adorable penguins). The degenerates at the table had some kind of mead thing in their shot glasses and I was served a delightful berry /herb cordial that I suspect came from a witch trying to cast a love spell a la Midsomer but fine, whatever, I just went with it. If I die I die. My companions followed with mead and beer out of drinking horns, I had an elderflower? Cordial that was really nice. I love that they had these handmade beverages. Another nice thing that I wish more restaurants would do is suggest the right number of starters, mains and sides for the party. We followed the instructions and had gravlax (Danish bloke said it was great), served with handmade cottage cheese (I took a Lactese when I saw that, no way was I missing out), dill, little handmade crackers and PICKLED LIME. Do you have a moment to talk about our lord and saviour, pickled lime? wow that is good stuff. Imma find a recipe for sure. The other starter was roasted beetroot, and again, delicious. The defining quality of this meal was that the main ingredients were enhanced by the preparation and presentation, but in no way overwhelmed. The beetroot was caramelised and served on a bed of??? Parsnip? Idk I need to look at the menu, but it was amazing. Mains was a one kilo tomahawk steak cooked quite rare, and for second mains we chose the pumpkin. Normally I eat my beef pink but not this pink, and I do put salt and pepper on. There was no salt on the table, so I trusted the chef and tried it- holy wow. Whatever they did to make this beef the way it was is amazing. Some kind of crust on the outside, but not throwing a million spices at us, just enough of whatever it was to elevate the beef. Amazzzzzing. The pumpkin dish was also a work of art, I love quinoa but the quinoa-deniers at my table also proclaimed it delicious. I think I tasted a little cinnamon but i'm probably wrong. Roasted broccoli and twice baked potatoes were the two sides and they were also stellar. The bill came in a beautiful card with a pop-up papercraft Viking boat that is possibly as adorable as the welcome penguins. Sooo in a nutshell, the medieval times theme park part was whatever, but the food was perfection. Well worth the drive to Sydney. Thanks for a delicious meal!

My sister booked this reservation for our family six weeks ago. We arrived at Mjolner before our booking time of 7:15 p.m. We were seated at the cramped bar until past 7:40 p.m. and when we were finally taken to our crumb-filled table the waitress gave us free shots of mead and announced, “May Odin give you knowledge on your path. May Thor grant you strength & courage on your way. And may Loki give you laughter as you go…” Little did we know we would need strength and laughter to endure this “restaurant”. We were unapologetically told that our cut off time of 9:15 p.m. remained even though we were taken to our table half an hour late and not informed of the policy upon booking or reservation confirmation. We followed their advice and ordered entrees and mains at the same time so that we could have enough time to eat it all. There were similar dismayed sentiments on the surrounding tables, and they gave us all one round of free shots to subdue the complaints. Four out of the five entrees arrived, and the rude-toned waitstaff didn’t seem to notice that a dish was missing, or care that our drinks were constantly delayed. Keep in mind that the food menu only has a choice of five entrees, six mains and three sides. Then we waited, and we waited, and we waited. The waitstaff confirmed again that we would have to leave at 9:15 p.m. No apologies, no clarification of where our mains were. Then it got to 9:00 p.m. We left our table and went to the front desk where we informed the host that we would be leaving as our mains still hadn’t arrived and IF they did there was no way we could eat them in ten minutes. He was surprised, he told us he would get the manager, the manager refused to speak to us. We paid for our entrees and drinks and left hungry with no apology. If we had stayed and waited to eat our food (assuming we wouldn’t have been kicked out, as other reviews claim) the patrons who crowded the bar area would have probably been waiting for our table for another hour. Thank God for McDonald’s or my sister wouldn’t have been able to take her medication in time. I don’t recommend this “restaurant” to anyone, especially if you are looking for an authentic norse experience.

Spent the last day in Sydney, trying to see what restaurant had good ratings to enjoy a last dinner. We found Mjolner; it looked promising, had great reviews, and even had mead that was different than other restaurants here. Not only that, but there was a buffet the last night we were going to be in Sydney. We booked a reservation for Thursday, during their buffet, and it was $80AUD per person. I can honestly say, this was not worth it at all.

When we arrived, we went down a flight of stairs and it had the Viking ambiance that was advertised. We were then greeted by a lady at the front, hoping to be seated as soon as possible, given that we had a reservation; however, there was a party that did not have a reservation that got seated prior to us.

While waiting for our server, the menu was presented and it took quite a bit for anyone to attend to us. There were empty cups we inquired about that was on the table — Apparently they were welcome shots, that no one had poured until we asked about it.

Given that it was a crowded night, we operated under the assumption that it was a possibility they were understaffed — however, we had still not been given any water while we waited for our food. As we were served our food, we ordered a couple of drinks.

The food was delicious, the swordfish being the best one of the buffet menu.

About half an hour has passed since we ordered our drinks, and we have not yet been given them. There was a lack of service overall, despite the delicious food, and I felt as though it brought down the overall experience for us. We left without finishing the whole buffet menu because the service was taking far too long to complete it to the end.

In my opinion, it was not worth $80AUD per person. Considering this was a restaurant that had reservations listed, and a charge would have occurred to the card on file if there was a no-show, I would hope that there would be more attentiveness by the staff, given the number of people was already predetermined.

At the end, we got the bill and were charged the un-served drinks. Thankfully, it was taken off.

Overall, I would not recommend this place during the buffet on Thursday’s. I assume that their service is better on other days, but be warned if you come...
