Not sure what all this hype is about.
My friend and I visited Meet Mica on 4/7. We have never been to this cafe before and were really looking forward to it. We were seated and given two menus. I didn't ave any time to browse around the cafe - we just came in and sat down straight away.
I wanted to get mocha and croissant. In the menu it is stated: Croissants and cakes - please check with our staff for daily choices.
So I ordered a small mocha first, and asked the guy which croissants they had for the day. And he said almond, chocolate and something else. I love chocolate croissants! And that's what I ordered.
My mocha came first. I would say I didn't enjoy it much - yes, the unicorn was pretty, but I would prefer good taste over looks. I couldn't really tell that it was mocha because there was no chocolate in the taste. I buy mocha specifically because I prefer chocolate coffee. Otherwise I would have bough cappuccino. If you offer this coffee to anyone - without telling them it's mocha - they would never be able to guess it's actually mocha.
And then my pastry came. Well. I ordered a chocolate croissant. What I got was not a croissant. It was a different pastry.
Look, I come from the Europe part of the world. Western food and western pastries are important for me.
'A croissant is a buttery, flaky, viennoiserie pastry of Austrian origin, named for its historical crescent shape'. Crescent shape. That's a part of croissant.
I was given a different type of pastry.
You might say: Oh what's the issue, it's still a chocolate pastry!
Well! If I go to a restaurant and ask them for hoki, but they bring me catfish saying - oh, it's still white fish, you can eat it!
Does it sound right? No.
Another issue - I cut this pastry in two halves and peeped inside. Nearly NO chocolate at all! AT ALL! Make sure your partners provide you with good pastry!
When we were paying the bill, I noticed croissants and other pastries near the counter. I hope it's display only? Because you are not allowed to keep food in that area?
Anyway, I was very upset with my visit to Meet Mica: absolutely couldn't understand why I paid more specifically for mocha when I wasn't even able to tell that it was actually mocha, and getting another type of pastry when I clearly ordered croissant... Well. I'm done with this place. :)
I sent them an email after the visit - no reaction. No simple apology. Copied the text into Google reviews. Got a reply 25 minutes later. :) Saying that I am a constantly grumpy person so they are sorry for me. :)
Well FYI all positive reviews are published in my blog - negative reviews are published there as well, however it's not in English so you won't be able to read it / understand it. Google reviews in my case are mostly for complaining out loud in English - and I am absolutely allowed to do that. A simple apology via email would have saved the situation - I don't need more. But your Google reviews reply ruined everything...
ย ย ย Read moreSurry Hills is the epicentre of the Sydney Cafe scene. Looking for a cafe in this area, you are spoilt for choice. We will let you in on a little tip, there is an awesome new Cafe in Surry Hills near the Redfern end, which you must visit. Get the jump on this place before it gets too popular. The cafe is called Meet Mica. Owned and run by the lovely Mica teams up with chef Lee, having learnt at Cordon Bleu school and mastered his technique at Tetsuya's. Lee is bringing his technique to provide a refined breakfast, brunch and lunch menu.
Meet Mica is a bright cafe with plenty of light. With a stylish Scandi fit out, right down to the coffee machine. Speaking of, they make a good coffee and use the Little Marionette brand.
The food here is beatifully presented with the chef's fine dining experience on display. The menu is Brunchcentric and could go either way toward breakfast or lunch. Not only pretty, the food is absolutely delicious.
A standout was the Matcha French Lava Toast. Matcha dishes have been on trend for a while now and we put this at the top of the list. The condensed milk syrup served with this dish was very impressive, silky and viscose, it was like we were pouring it in slow motion, just amazing! Cut into the lava toast and the gooey matcha filling oozes out. This dish is decadent, not overly sweet and coated with the caramelised sugar which gives a nice smokey flavour. This dish is a must order.
Another quality breakfast option was the porridge, not your standard porridge. A beautifully presented bowl with plenty of technique on display through the use of a banana custard and coconut foam. Also utilising one of of our favourite Japanese flavours, the citrus flavour of the yuzu and topped with almonds. I'll certainly be going back for this.
If you are visiting a little later in the morning, another item high on the list has to be the lobstser congee. Very inviting and a perfect winter warmer. An extravagant dish, with lobster slow cooked in rice congee. Topped with sliced lobster tail and a slow cooked egg, just droolworthy. Delicately flavoured with green shallot and ginger and katsuoboshi crush.
Meet Mica is a cafรจ with a cool set up and an amazing menu and good coffee. Ticking all of the boxes, a must visit cafรจ. It is hands down one of the best...

The matcha green toast is carved out from the centre and filled with warm, liquidy matcha ganache ๐ต and topped of with pink-red strawberry biscuit dust ๐. Condensed milk is served on the side (to be poured onto the toast) with seasonal fruits ๐. โโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโ (Check my bio for a description of the ๐ฝ๏ธ๐คฉ๐ต emojis) โ ๐ฝ๏ธ - This oozy matcha composite was definitely a mouthful and had a decent serving size ๐. However, I was not exactly full but that's cause I have a sweet tooth and I like to eat a lot ๐ . โ ๐คฉ - MATCHA FANS AND FANACTICS! This is an absolute treat! The matcha in this toast is neither overly bitter/strong or sweet. The condensed milk allows you to adjust the sweetness level of the toast to your liking (I basicaly poured the whole thing) ๐. The tanginess of the fruits go in well with the warm oozing matcha lava ๐. Now as for people who are not big fans of Matcha, my friend who came here with me was a bit matchaaed out ๐ง. She felt the matcha was amazing and first but by the end of it, she was overwhelmed. Only a true matcha fan can finish the Matcha Lava French Toast on their own and that's ok ๐ต. Maybe share the dish with a friend if you're not sure and you could order some of the other great things Meet Mica has to offer (check the pro tip section for more details)! โ ๐ต - $20 (A bit more on the expensive side but definitely worth it if you're a hardcore matcha fan). โโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโ *PRO TIP: Share the match toast with a friend and order a side or another dish such as their Egg Benedict on Fried Bao ๐ณ or their Reuben Hills OG Blend Coffee...
