I stayed in room 4. Firstly, I had booked with Booking.com but they indicated no room available for my last night, so I booked my last night of 5 at another hotel, which was much less convenient. On arrival, I mentioned this to the check in staff who confirmed that a room was available, so I booked the last night there as well and cancelled the other hotel.||Check in was fast and friendly.||Then the stairs, oh the stairs. I have a bad back and my legs are not much better, so I hauled myself up and down the stairs for the week I was there.||The main reason for choosing the Hornsby Inn, was it's proximity to my mother's old flat that I had to prepare for sale, proximity to the rail line and proximity to the main shopping area of Hornsby. This was an excellent location for all of those things.||The room was basic, a double bed and a single bed, a table and chair, TV, in window air-con, a small fridge, and bathroom/toilet with towels and basic toiletries available. The staff cleaned it every day, so the room was well presented. The shower was very good, with a flexible shower head, and the towels were full sized, a big plus.||One issue was when the curtains were drawn, you couldn't use the air-con, but there was a ceiling fan that did the job nicely.||Air-con for the main building was fairly loud during the evening, but shut down latter at night. I wasn't really bothered by it.||The room advertises that it comes with breakfast, but that is all in the mini fridge, tea and coffee with electric jug and toaster, two types of cereal, milk and some spreads for the toast. I purchased a box of my favourite cereal and a ltr of milk at the nearby supermarket and used the crockery provided by the hotel.||Meals at the Bistro downstairs are patchy, but there are numerous restaurants within walking distance so that wasn't an issue for me.||All in all, this exceeded my expectations and I spent a very pleasant week there. I thought the price per night a little high, but due to the above mentioned advantages, it was...
Read moreI stayed there 4 nights I'm rating it a warm and friendly 3 stars. Not because Hornsby Inn failed, but rather because it succeeded despite itself. The bed was very comfortable. The room was small, but tidy. The toilet smelled of urine, but I went to the Coles at the Westfield Mall across the road and got some bleach-based bathroom cleaner and sorted that out in minutes. The bathroom was spotless otherwise. The street is noisy and people partying in the area could be loud at times. Occasionally cigarette smoke from the street below would waft in the window. I'm a non-smoker.
There are two pokie parlours one floor below and a bevy of bars I never did make any sense of. The "Absolute Thai" restaurant on the same level was obviously popular. I had dinner there one evening. Thai cuisine isn't really my thing, but I ate it all and wasnt hungry after. There is also a TAB and a drive-through bottle store. Before you gamble (if you do) there are numerous signs warning about gambling responsibly. They are a bit faded, like the Inn itself. But think well worn old slippers, rather than decrepit. It will help.
It's close to Hornsby train station. Probably the closest hotel.
You can't really cook in the room, but it had a fridge and was good for storing the elements of cold dishes like wraps and fruit with meusli, nuts, and yogurt.
Checking in required chasing a bartender to then chase whoever it is who checks you in. Allow 15-20 minutes. But once done, it's done. The staff were all very nice if you bumped into any.
The area might give you concerns for your personal safety, but one night I accidentally left my room key in the door and went to bed. It was still there in the morning. No problem. That time, anyway.
Despite having all the key ingredients of a really horrible, grotty place, it isn't a horrible, grotty place. I enjoyed my stay and if I needed to visit the area again I'd book a very cheap, mostly clean, comfy room at the Hornsby Inn with the confidence arising from a better-than-expected 3-star,...
Read moreI'm on a circa 4000km road trip across the Eastern seaboard of the country going through the entirety of NSW via the coast.
I booked two nights in the Hornsby Inn in Sydney's northern suburbs.
Prices are cheap, the rooms are dated but functional, includes all the essentials, beds are on the softer side. The AC is one of those wall units, it works but I found I had to leave it on the entire stay to keep the room temperature nice and cool.
Parking is a bit of an interesting affair, you need to come in the drive thru entrance on Hunter(?) Street, which is a one way driveway, which leads around the side of the building to the hotel parking, it's a bit tight so get your driving hat on. If you're traveling using the GPS then it'll lead you around the block a few times while you try figure how to get into the car park.
But the pub itself is great, has all the usual gambling facilities, a good choice of beer on tap, food is cheaply priced and decent.
I was there for the karaoke night and there was some serious talent on show! Wow Hornsby Inn karaoke night goes off!
All the staff at the Hornsby Inn are super friendly and serve you very efficiently, a shout out to all the front of house staff here who made my stay fantastic.
Conveniently located very close to Hornsby Train Station you can leave your car behind and get around Sydney via their very cheap and effective public transport network.
Then when it's time to go, you're not far off the freeway to get out of Sydney cleanly without fuss.
Certainly worth staying here if you're traveling through Sydney with a car as the access out of the place is superb.
For the dated room and interesting parking it makes up for it more than enough in the very low price you pay to stay in this location, so still 5 stars.
Keep up the...
