The University of Sydney is an amazing place to study. It is the oldest and one of the most prestigious universities in Australia. The campus is absolutely beautiful, reminiscent and modelled after Oxford and Cambridge and has been ranked in the top 10 of the "Most Beautiful Universities in the World" by the British Telegraph and the Huffington Post. Many famous alumni have studied and worked here and it has been consistently ranked in about the Top 0.3% of universities in the world.
Student experience here is amazing, there is always something going on, be it free barbecues everyday, almost fortnightly festivals and fairs, the markets on Wednesday, and with hundreds of university union endorsed clubs and societies to join, including the standard, generic clubs such as sporting, faculty specific societies and many musical ensembles, to some of the more quirky, creative and fun ones such as the Disney Society, Chocolate Society (Free chocolate events every week!), and even the "Beer Brewing & Music Appreciation Society". There's also a "Microsoft Technology Lounge", with many laptops, tablets, mobiles and even an X-Box Kinect to use, in addition to many such places. The campus is about a 10 minute bus ride from the central city, and about at 15 minute bus ride to Bondi Beach, allowing students to fully enjoy all that Sydney has to offer. Many stores are open on campus, with many cafes, restaurants, bars, fast food outlets, and many more services available, including but not limited to outlets such as an Apple store, mobile store, Optometrist, Dental surgery, Medical centres and hairdressers, in addition to a dedicated Post Office - the University of Sydney campus even has its own postcode.
Education here is genuinely amazing, and with ongoing improvements, the latest technology is made available to all students, with dozens of libraries all over campus, with resources also available online. Lectures are recorded and may be streamed live from home, and are readily available to re-view online at any time and many of my lecturers are well acclaimed in their fields,...
Read moreHorribly incompetent administration that has no compassion for students who are genuinely in the middle of a crisis and are seeking assignment extensions for genuine reasons. They will nitpick your application and reject it for arbitrary reasons.
Horribly incompetent academic appeals team who are essentially cronies who shield professors who breach their own grading criteria to give you a wholly unsubstantiated grade. If you appeal against the grade to the faculty, the faculty will ignore all your evidence and falsely claim that you have not demonstrated any breaches of policy. They will then ask you to appeal to the SAB. The SAB, the fine print states, cannot verify academic decisions. They can only verify whether policy has been breached. Since a breach of grading criteria would require them to look into academic decisions, they are poised to claim they can’t do this and close your case. If you avoid the SAB and appeal to the faculty again, they will withdraw your complaint on your behalf, without your consent, and then send you an automated email falsely claiming you are the one who withdrew your complaint. (In my case, the staff involved in this: Dr Brendon O’Connor, Dr Minglu Chen, Dr Naomi Riddle, Matthew Daniel)
Horribly incompetent international admissions staff who hold up applications for weeks on end due to their own failings in reviewing documents carefully enough to see that they do indeed meet the university's admission requirements.
Not everything at the university is bad, some professors and other staff and of course students are great. However, these egregious negatives outweigh...
