Been coming to Ken’s for a while Started getting attitude for a fair few months from the plus sized younger girl who is there most of the time. It has become repetitive. I say very little to her yet consistently receive clear attitude that I am not welcomed. My mum is of the belief that it is judgment bc I am currently unemployed as I am injured. Regardless, it’s absurd. Other staff members are literally watching her do this.
Secondly, their pies seem to have changed recently. I wasn’t sure if it was just me as I only stick to a few flavours, but the ratio of steak to sauce is different and the pastry does not hold together as well. On top of this, Ken’s has decided to move their prices up. $4 for a mini? Ken do you remember when the price of pies themselves were $4? They closed around Christmas time with no notification, so we turned up to find it was closed. We were very excited for it to reopen to be greeted with increased prices and differing quality. I’d like to say that it’s to ‘cover rising costs’ but I am already aware of the insane profit margin that pie bakery’s attract, and I have been told in the past that the remaining pies go to charity, which sounds great, except for the fact there is never any sales or regard for people who are less fortunate, unless you are homeless. I am guessing it is for tax write off purposes.
Anyway I hope one day in the future I can return and things can return to the way they were, although I kid you not, for over a year I have received attitude from this girl. At this rate I am guessing another bakery will soon take over this position. I am disappointed to...
Read moreWords fail to describe how delicious Ken’s pies are. They are a religious experience. Eating them has brought me closer to God! My kids and I are addicted to these pastry encrusted meat delights. I was told that Ken had a pie shop somewhere else on the Coast and when he sold the shop the contract prohibited him from opening another pie shop on the Coast for 5 years. I didn’t believe this story until I asked Ken himself and he confirmed it. Whenever I go for a pie, I usually see Ken actually doing the cooking, stirring pots and restocking the ovens. The work space behind the counter is clean and hygienic, with all cooking staff in uniforms and hats. All pies are chunky steak (except the mince pie of course), top quality meat is used and the variety of flavours boggles the mind. Even vegetarians are catered for. When I had a lamb roast pie it was like my mum had cooked a roast lamb, chopped it up, put in the world’s best pastry and covered it with her own scrumptious gravy. DO NOT leave without trying their profiteroles, out of this world. And I would like to express my gratitude for the free, all-I-can-eat sauce that you provide. Before I discovered your shop, I would always resent paying $1.20 for three small packets of sauce. Now I can indulge in all the sauce I desire. I have never been to a shop that does this for their pie customers. Thank you so much. There’s little wonder this gem of a shop is constantly busy with locals and holiday...
Read moreTravelled a little way to visit the mecca of quality unique pies recommended highly on social media buzz / mentions and word of mouth.
We visited the day before Australia day. Hot as balls, humid and the place was raging busy when we first popped in. Got my selection of pies available then exited, returned an hour later to grab the pies that weren't available before but now ready.
They have a massive turnover of pies / stock and if you're willing to wait a little bit. They can crank out pies on short demand if they are in the pipeline of production which these guys don't sleep on.
If you get there early enough, they might have your order ready to go, but luckily for me, options opened up with a 12 minute wait. Then a re-visit 1 hr later managed to collect the rest of my list of pies to take home and try over the next week.
Drink selection isn't great... that's about the worst thing I can say about the place.
Staff are great, pies are next level. You'll enjoy traversing the range and finding your favourite. Cheese and bacon yardstick is going to be hard to beat, but it's pretty pedestrian compared to other offerings available being honest.
Follow your nose and heart into the shop and to your favourite selection.
It'll be more than edible / good. Their more exotic pies are excellent.
I drove more than 60km each way for...
