I can't remember how I first discovered this place. I believe that I had been to some similar businesses around the area, but I had never been to this one. Then on one eventful day, I was invited by one of my employers for a work party before Christmas. Lo and behold, the party was set to take place at this restaurant in the Central Business District of Wollongong; Kinn Thai.
In all honestly, I got sick of this place very quickly. The location is moderately okay. I can't say that I like where it is in the region, but I can't say that hate where it is too. Though, I will say that it is quite the inconvenience to walk to the place. Lots of people do not have the energy or the patience to walk, so it is sort of annoying having to walk.
Anyway, I have attended this restaurant on many occasions since then. And I must say... it really hasn't been different.
The food there is very very mediocre and sometimes it can be quite bland. I don't appreciate going to a restaurant just to be served boring meals. For example, I once tried the orange duck, and if you know me by now, I love my duck. I will give then some credit; the duck is boneless. But I can't shy away from the fact that the duck was way too sweet. The sauce was very close to being perfect, but in the end, was so far away from being perfect. The sweetness was so overbearing that I don't think I could ever go back there to eat a meat like that again.
Also, the rice there is too sticky. I don't appreciate the consistency of the rice. When I ordered it, I saw the price and thought, "Wow, this must be a really fine type of rice". I thought that they would make it special in some way. So far, the best special rice I have found is in Dapto! Not in Wollongong! These restaurants need to step up their game. I can't believe that they can't develop a perfect recipe for duck... and now rice! The rice was also flavourless. They need to differentiate themselves from the competitors in the area, because it is embarrassing to think that they sell bland and sticky rice with zero flavour. I also find it quite concerning that they have lasted this long, knowing that this rice is so bad. The rice needs to be easily forkable, but also easily clumpable. The rice needs to be easy to swallow, and also easy to chew. This rice is everything.
The curries that they have as well are pathetic too. They have various different flavours within the dish, but the colours don't work out. I don't understand how they make it. The ingredients list needs to be fully released to the public, because, quite frankly, I am scared of it. I am scared of the curry dishes that they sell.
Also, can someone really provide me a reason for why the food is so expensive. Everything is so much! I cannot afford to eat their anymore. They were so cheap they didn't even print new books with the prices. They simply got a pen and scribbled off the old prices. It is so dodgy snd stupid to do that. It makes it obvious to the customer that they are ripping us off. It also looks ugly. I dont want to see scribbles in the menu books. I literally wanted to vomit. Is this a third world country or what? The sides were especially expensive. They increased their rice by one and a half dollars if I remember correctly. This is atrocious. I can't afford to eat here. I really can't! All the meals are also expensive. It is hard to spend under $100 these days. And they are making it so much harder. This inflation is getting out of hand. I can imagine the rent is also increasing in these places. How do they make enough money? Well, I don't care. It is not my job to care. But this business has an obligation to lower their prices and provide the best service and food.
Speaking of service, I don't like the people they employ. They are all awkward and they don't smile enough. I want to have a fine experience when I am paying to eat out. But I am not going to pay for my meal unless the employers smile. Do they even want me there? Because they look like they don't cars about me. If they don't want me then they should say...
Read moreWe drove 1.5hrs to celebrate our Anniversary and decided to try Kinn Thai in Wollongong after some great reviews on their website. We decided to book for the 5pm seating (best idea, ever) before the rush hour period. We were greeted with two friendly staff who were happy to help us with some dish recommendations. We ordered Chicken Skewers (Entree) and that peanut sauce (O.M.G.) it was delicious. The mains were Grilled Wagyu Beef (Medium cooked), there was something great about that dipping sauce, it just paired well with the meal. Beef Massaman, which is a must have in every Thai Restaurant. Their beef was succulent and the sauce had the right flavour & consistency (would've preferred the potato pieces instead of mash). The Soft Shell Crab in Chilli Jam (Mild) Sauce. The soft shell crab was crispy and battered perfectly. The sauce was just amazing too...worked perfectly.
Overall experience, Restaurant had a lovely decor. It was nice and inviting with plenty of seats inside for big family gatherings. They also had outdoor settings, great for that summer Gong breeze. Atmosphere, pretty busy close to 6pm. Lots of orders and line up which is a good sign!! Best to book online and save your seats.
Price was very decent for the quality of their food. We only paid $120 for our meal which included 2 Mocktails. We probably won't get that much in Sydney (City) for that price to be honest.
Parking is limited on the streets but FREE after certain times on Saturday.
We will definitely be back again to try their other menu's. I'll definitely recommend this to everyone including my families...

Firstly, the food is very reasonably priced. My personal favourite is the Massamun Curry with some rice. My partner and I also love the starters/small dish such as the Crab Prawn Roll and Garlic and Chive Dumplings. The curry is always perfectly balanced between creamy and flavourful. The beef is super tender and easy to eat, it basically melts in your mouth. The Crab Prawn Rolls are crispy and freshly made, and the dumplings are perfect in that they're crispy but soft inside.
We also come frequently for the lunch special where the prices are extremely reasonable and we always are excited when we decide to come here. The food is always high in quality and made with good ingredients and care. The chefs are elite and should be praised for their consistency in their quality.
Secondly, the service is impeccable. Often the same lady serves us, and is amazing at what she does. Always serves with a smile and helps us with anything we need. However, we went to Kinn Thai Tuesday 28th at night and were served by a lady with blonde/black hair and she was so kind as well. Really made our dining experience just that much better. Both workers and the entire staff are incredible and we will always be glad to come back with that service.
Finally, the atmosphere is amazing. There is always a great ambience and soft music playing in the background. Even when it is busy it is very quick to get food and drinks, and I am even going as far to say that it gets my Seal of Approval. It also is my number 1 restaurant in the Wollongong...
