I know this is a long review, but it's a full description of my "Der Steierer" experieence. In my first review I thought I would be nice with the restaurant and give it 3 stars. That was until I got the check which made me really mad! So I decided to give my full real review: When I got there, I didn't have to wait and got a table right away! The waiter asked me what I wanted to drink so I told him I wanted to drink water. Here's the first complaint: he braught me a small bottle of water (which of course I had to pay for) and didn't even offer me tap water like EVERY other restaurant in Graz does. I mean, give the customer the opportunity to chose, like everyone else does! The I ordered the Gulash which was good but a little bit too salty for my taste. Here's the next complaint: The Gulash was served with a lot of sauce and 4-5 pieces of meat (so far so good). Once you are done eating the meat, you are left with a lot of sauce. So I asked for a little bit of bread to clean up my dish and enjoy the sauce. They charged me 1,80€ for the basket of bread. I only ate 2 slices (I have to admit it tasted good)! If I had known, I would have eaten all of it instead of allowing them (and this is just my guess) to serve the rest of it to the next customer who asks for bread. After that I got the famous Backhendl, which was even saltier than the Gulash. For those who don't know what it is, it's basically just breaded, pan-fried chicken wings (sorry if this statement offends Austrian people) with not a lot of meat. But I was ok with it. I'm not gonna complain about a regional typical meal.
Beside the water and the bread "thing" the waiters pretty much do their job, just don't expect anything more... I don't know if the chef is in love, but IMO he seems to like the taste of salt, at least that was the case for the 2 meals I had. The location and the restaurant itself is quite nice, plus they sell lots of different wine. Will I go back? No. There are a lot of other restaurants offering better food and...
Read more2 years back, I had the chance to visit Der Steirer, and it was quite an interesting experience. I had made a reservation, but when I arrived, I found out that the restaurant was fully booked. Determined to make the best of it, I decided to wait at a nearby bar in the hotel.
The wait turned out to be quite long, which inadvertently raised my expectations even higher. I couldn't help but imagine that the food at Der Steirer must be exceptional if it was in such high demand. So, with great anticipation, I finally got a table and ordered their famous schnitzel.
I have to say, the schnitzel at Der Steirer was very good. The meat was tender, the breading was crispy, and it was definitely a satisfying dish. However, I must admit that I've had better schnitzel in Vienna, so the taste didn't come as a big surprise to me.
On the positive side, the ambience at Der Steirer was quite pleasant. The restaurant had a cozy and welcoming atmosphere, and it added to the overall dining experience. The staff was friendly and attentive, which made the visit more enjoyable.
All in all, my visit to Der Steirer had its ups and downs. While the schnitzel was tasty, it didn't exceed my expectations. However, the ambience and service were definitely highlights of the evening. If you're in the mood for a decent schnitzel and a cozy atmosphere, Der Steirer is worth a visit. Just keep in mind that if you're expecting mind-blowing flavors, you might find better options elsewhere,...
Read moreWe had a rather disappointing experience at this restaurant. Despite the place being nearly empty, we had to wait a surprisingly long time for a table. We were with two children, and although they offered a children's menu in the form of a coloring sheet, we only received it after everyone had already placed their orders. In hindsight, perhaps we should have asked about it earlier but still, one would expect it to be provided upfront when dining with kids.
Things got worse when the bill arrived. The waiter served us a different bottle of water than the one we clearly ordered – significantly more expensive. At 7.20 eur for a bottle of water, even by Graz standards, it is too much.
And the most important- food. The schnitzel was bland, and the rest of the dishes, which were from the classic Styrian cuisine, were underwhelming. Just the day before, we had dined at another restaurant in Graz where the food was much more flavorful and creatively presented. All of us at the table felt the same – uninspired and disappointed.
All in all, it feels like this place is designed more for unsuspecting tourists than for those looking for an authentic...
