Mangolds — Restaurant in Graz

When the Grazer vegetarian scene more and more formed back in the 1980ies, in that extent that a vegetarian restaurant can be run profitable in Graz, the Mangolds was one of the first of its kind and the biggest, a veggie self-service restaurant, which is seen as institution for the vegetarians of Graz ever since. The Mangolds is still making its main profit at lunch time, and therefore it closes early, on weekdays at 7 pm, and on Saturday at 4 pm.

In recent years there are more and more products for vegans here at Mangolds in the Griesgasse. Its location in the city center makes this restaurant and café a perfect spot to explore the city. Since recently there is also another Mangolds in the Zinzendorfgasse, in the campus area of the Karl-Franzens-University, the heart of the student life of Graz, which is open until 10 pm.

Here at Mangolds Griesgasse the seating area got more coziness, since it was refurbished a while ago. Now there is even a sofa corner and plenty of seats, which were nicely cushioned, but there are still some wooden chairs and stools from the before the renovation, for those who like to have it more spartan. And Mangolds even have a Kids Corner for our little ones.

The staff is very friendly and willing to help and the vegetarian and vegan food is delicious and its worth mentioning, that you put as much as you like on your plate, as it will be weighted at the cashier. So you only pay the weight of the meal on your plate. That makes it quite convenient, as you can control it for yourself, how much you want to eat. There are also delicious whole grain desserts here at Mangolds.

I've been here five times. The food was always good, but only twice did we wait for it for only about half an hour. The other times it was closer to one hour, once even over an hour. If you have that much time, give it a try; for me that is not an acceptable time frame for a restaurant. The waiters also seem rather clueless, forget orders repeatedly, don't come by often, and once left the used dishes and glasses of the previous guests on our table, even after they (finally) took our order. Considering the rather ambitious pricing, I can't recommend this place. A pity, because it could be very nice, if managed properly. But I guess they won't feel enticed to change, as they'll probably get by thanks to the good location and promise of...

It's a nice place. Large with offering a place from for coffee and drinks and another place for food. They also have stuff for purchasing and a place for kids to play.
