The Cafe Ritter is among the elegant Viennese Coffee House Institutions Vienna is known for. This place was established in 1867. Here you can spend a while and feel the comfort of the tradition with nice decor and atmosphere of the old days of the Austrian-Hungarian Monarchy. You spend your time here in elegant and newly refurbished interior and have your cup of coffee, tea or simply one of these delicious tarts, cakes, strudels from the showcase. The Cafe Ritter is one of these coffee shops you have to experience in if you are in Vienna and on the trail to get a feel for the coffee house culture in Vienna. The waiters are busy and old school, meaning you better be quick in your order as they don’t spend much time on explaining you the menu or have a chat with you as this place is quite popular and therefore busy. The Mozart Tart I had is a delicious marzipan cream tart, and I had it together with a Kleiner Brauner, a traditional coffee many Viennese take along with their dessert. From Vienna with Love! A nice Viennese cafe serving coffee, cakes, all day breakfast and local dishes. Looks a bit traditional and classic, but that is exactly what we wanted to try as tourists. We saw many locals sitting inside, so we thought this place must be a right place to try something Viennese. The cakes were tasty, and the service was impeccable. The waiter who served us was experienced, faultless and attentive. We also saw some people having late lunch, and their dishes look great. The only minor issue I found was the waiter said they only accept cash, which is not so common for tourists coming from a Nordic country. Also, it is unnecessary to tell customers that the bill doesn’t include service charges. Because I recognise their high level of service, and would be happy to leave tips, and I certainly did. I’d love to go back there again to try some local dishes.

We found Cafe Ritter after searching the map for Kaiserschmarrn. It was a short walk from our dinner location and in the middle of a premium shopping area. The desserts are large portions and quite tasty. I had an apple strudel, although I was disappointed that it was served cold. Our waiter was swift and friendly, speaking German and English for our mixed-language group. We were a little i pleasantly surprised to discover at the conclusion that the cafe only accepts cash Euros (no credit/bank cards). While the rest of my party waited at the table, I had to walk about 250 meters down to the Bank of Austria to pull out cash so that we could pay the bill. In such a premium shopping area in a world class city with high tourism, the cafe needs to accept bank cards. Our ticket was over 20 EUR, which is a sufficient amount to accept cards. There are certainly prettier cafes in Vienna, but this one was a convenient location this evening. I'm not sure I would return specifically unless I just happened to be in the area again.

We visited one of the oldest coffee houses in Vienna. As it was very early, the place was mostly visited by the locals than the tourists. The atmosphere was nice and calm. The staff dressed formally and were friendly. We ordered Wiener mélange, a hot chocolate with optional whipped cream (same price), and an apple strudel. The food and drinks came at a reasonable time. The drinks were standard with the traditional setup (glass of water and upturned spoon). The apple strudel was absolutely the best! It was served warm, the layers of the pastry were defined and crispy like it's just came out of the oven, the ratio between the pastry and the filling was good, and the sweetness was just perfect for us. The price is decent too. This has been one of our culinary highlights of Vienna. Thank you! Note: cash only. There are plenty of ATMs on the high street.

I really enjoyed my lunch! :-) I had a wienerschnitzel which was absolutely delicious. I also had a Topfenstrudel for dessert which I can recommend, it reminds one of Apfelstrudel, but it is made with quark (Topfen) instead. So if you want to try something different for dessert than the "usual" Apfelstrudel, take the Topfenstrudel! :-) The waiter was very serviceminded. Next time I am in Vienna, I will visit the place again. PS: Please note that the café does not accept credit cards, only cash.

One of the last great, classic Viennese coffee houses from the 19th century. The interior has been largely preserved and only carefully modernised in the 1950s. Both the drinks and the food are typical and varied. The dishes even include some vegetarian classics such as cheese toast, egg dumplings, roasted dumplings with egg or spinach with potato stew. The staff are also suitably polite and professional. All at moderate prices. Recommendation!
