I recently came to this café just to ask if they are able to make a coffee to go. I don't speak German but I speak Czech and English and I was just visiting Vienna for the weekend. I asked the waitress in English if she is able to make a coffee to go for me she replied something in German pointing at the bar I went there thinking I am about to meet somebody who speaks English. Unfortunately there was nobody so I went back to the lady. She was talking to somebody in Slovak (which I understand 100% because it is very similar to Czech). Waitress didn't see me coming and I heard her saying a lot of F words and other vulgar expressions in Slovak about my person. She was saying that she is not fing serving anybody who doesn't speak German and if you are in fing Austria you are supposed to speak the language and that she doesn't understand these stupid people. I approached her and told her I understand what she was saying. She looked very surprised and replied that she was just explaining something to her colleague. This situation is totally unacceptable for me especially in the city like Vienna which is visited by tourists from around the world and for sure many of them don't speak German. She could have said she didn't speak English or something like that and it would be totally fine but this is awful. People with this kind of mindset shouldn't be hired for such...
Read moreClassic Vienna coffee house. Perfectly frozen in time. Extremely well maintained but perhaps not 'renovated' since the 1950s and then, in the style of the previous 70 years. If you want to experience a 'real' Vienna 'Kaffehaus' this is one. Robert Musil, author of 'The Man Without Qualities' reputedly used to be a regular as did Wiener Lieder singer Richard Tauber. Its a little off the 'well beaten' tourist track although near enough Hunderwasser's masterpiece 'Kunsthaus' to be very easily reachable. Rather understaffed, so perhaps not for the very parched and impatient tourist. But that's not who it's for. (Anyone looking for international fast service could walk a bit further to Starbucks on the Landstraße). This establishment belongs to a slower, quieter world where paper newspapers are still read and conversation is more muted. There's no music to shout over. It's not for everybody. But places like this, while not totally unique to Vienna, are not to be found anywhere in the world, outside of the great cities of former Austro- Hungarian empire and should probably be valued for this reason alone. But there's more here than that. It's a...
Read moreSeveral times now we walked into this restaurant when people were being served schnitzels and tafelspitz yet we were told that it was too late for us to order. In fact, last time we were given menus by the waitress, we sat down for 30 minutes because the waitress was busy serving meals to everyone - when we finally called her over, she said it was too late to order and that the kitchen was closed. She said it whilst delivering hot meals in her arms. This was really upsetting as we were really hungry with kids and looking forward to a good meal (if you do manage to order the food is actually really good). The cash payment is also terribly annoying, who carries 100 Euro in cash these days, so...
