Gasthaus Grünauer — Restaurant in Vienna

I have travelled a lot and been to many restaurants across many great cities, but I truly think this may be the best I have ever visited. The warmth, humanity and fantastic hospitality of this restaurant is unrivalled. We visited quite late on our rainy first night in Vienna, and it was completely worth the wait. The service is efficient but patient - they will happily explain the dishes in English (as the menu is beautifully handwritten in Deutsch). Our first server was very kind and made excellent recommendations, including a delicious Gruner Veltliner wine. Our other waitress was energetic, funny and knowledgeable - she taught us all about the special Uhudler wine and the grapes which formed the basis of our dessert, and gave us samples of the 'sturm' and the wine to explain it practically to us. Fantastic place. Very much for locals, and when we were in there - twice - it felt like everyone knew each other. The food was excellent and very Austrian (but not in a touristmenu sort of way), and the owner is a wine buff with an excellent set of wines by the glass or bottle. From June 5, 2025: My daughter did her homework in selecting this restaurant and it did not disappoint. The food was fantastic once we had the menu translated for us because Google translate did not work at all to decipher it for us.
