Came with a friend tonight, and a friendly young lady took our order. We opted for two smashed burgers with fries. Admittedly, I didn’t have high expectations, given that the smashburger scene in Vienna is just starting to rise. Having explored various smashburger joints in the city, Smash Box was next on our list.
Upon placing our order, the waiter informed us of a 30-minute wait, which, while acceptable, felt quite extended for a smashburger. Understandably, staffing can be a challenge, and good employees are hard to come by, not just in Vienna. When the food finally arrived, the potato buns, as indicated on the menu, were exceptional—easily the best buns for a smashburger. Having sampled burgers across LA and NYC, I can attest that potato buns are unbeatable.
The medium-cooked meat, still delightfully smashed and crunchy on the sides, deserves a solid 5 stars for quality. After just a couple of bites, it became evident that this was the best smashburger we’ve had in Vienna to date—kudos for that achievement.
The sauce, a blend of ketchup and mayo resembling Shake Shack’s but lacking garlic, could be improved. A jalapeño sauce might be an interesting addition. Nevertheless, the fresh lettuce and onions were spot-on, contributing to the overall freshness of the burger.
Smash Box, you’ve won me over. Your burger comes closest to what I’ve experienced in the US, and for that, commendable work. As for the fries, while they are on the crispier side, adding cheese fries to the menu would be a welcome option, complementing the smashburger experience.
Regrettably, I deducted a star for the service—not due to the burgers or the friendly staff, but because of the cash-only policy. In a world where card payments are the norm, especially for a bill totaling 50 euros for two burgers, drinks, and tips, the absence of a card option is inconvenient. A small percentage added to the price for card payments would be a reasonable compromise. We had to make a detour to an ATM, and it was a bit of a hassle.
Overall, Smash Box delivers a great burger experience with friendly service. Despite the inconvenience of payment, I’ll definitely be...
Read moreI had to go here because a lot of people said this was the best burger in Vienna.
The place: Smashbox is a very small burgerjoint that shares a restroom with the restaurant next door. There are a few seats available inside and 2-3 outside. The menu consists of under 10 items including vegetarian options.
the staff was decently friendly but nothing special.
the food:
I had the normal cheeseburger with truffle fries and the banana pudding.
the burger was very good, but after half of it, it got boring. Its still better than 90% of the burgers in austria, especially the crispy smash patty, but nothing mindblowing.
the fries themselves were very good, but the dump the sauce over them instead of giving it in a dipping container, which i personally dont like. the truffle mayo was decent.
The best thing I had was the banana pudding. very light and creamy, very good.
It was also not cheap with my meal coming out at 25€
I will return here, but there are better burgers in vienna.
UPDATE: I visited Smashbox again last week and tried the cheeseburger and the wings. The Burger was much better than last time, so now this is definitely a contender for the best burger in Vienna. And the WINGS…. WOW! Those were without question the best wings ive had in a long long...
Read moreWe came here on our first day in Vienna without a reservation, but it was no problem. The burger was so delicious, as were the fries and the homemade sauces (I got the korean spicy mayo and two of my friends got the ketchup, they said it was very good)!! :) It's not cheap by any means, but that's to be expected for Vienna and for the quality of the food you're getting. The service is very good, they mixed up some details of our orders but even if I told them I was fine without the bacon jam burger they went ahead and sorted it out so that it matched my order! They were also very kind throughout our whole dinner :D One (very minor) critique would be that when we went the place was very very poorly lit, it was kinda difficult to read the menu😭 but it made for a cosy atmosphere for sure, I wasn't too...
