Alice — Restaurant in Ghent

To sum up.. A solidly mediocre experience..

Alice Tearoom in Ghent was, in a word, average. My partner and I decided to give it a try, however the experience fell far short of anything memorable.

First off, the service was disappointing. The staff seemed cold and uninterested, giving off the distinct impression that they didn’t want to be there. No smiles, no warmth, and certainly no effort to make us feel welcome. It’s rare to encounter such unengaged service in a place with a reputation, and it definitely left us feeling a bit unwelcome.

The food itself? Let’s just say it didn’t wow us. We started with their lemonade, which turned out to be far too sour for my liking, a refreshing drink shouldn’t feel like a challenge to get through. For our main course, we both ordered entrecôte, which was unfortunately chewy and lacked that satisfying tenderness you expect from such a dish. The fries were just so uninspired, seemed more like an afterthought, crisp brown tiny bits rather than the fries you expect when paying 25EU, and the accompanying salad was just… salad. Bland and unimpressive.

The restaurant was busy, and we had to wait quite a while for our food. By the time it arrived, my partner and I were so hungry that we didnt want to make a fuss about anything being subpar. It was edible but that’s about the highest praise I can offer.

The one redeeming factor was the warm and cozy interior. Unfortunately, even the decor, the ambiance, the uniform, the energy felt slightly outdated, more tired than charming. It seems that Alice isn’t hoping for timeless elegance but instead coasting on its atmosphere.

Would I recommend it? Honestly, no. It wasn’t horrible, but it was far from good. Mediocre food, cold service, and nothing special to make the visit worthwhile. We zijn hier gisteren (zondagochtend) gaan brunchen in de vroege shift, 9u30. We waren bij de eerste en werden goed ontvangen. Het was onze eerste keer bij Alice en we hadden er veel zin in! We krijgen vrijwel direct een glaasje Prosecco (ik vond hem iets te zoet) en een glaasje versgeperst fruitsap. Er werd niets verder gezegd, wat ik een beetje jammer vond. Het is -denk ik- maar een kleine moeite om te vragen of het onze eerste keer was bij Alice en of we de formule kenden. Nu was het een beetje afwachten tot we anderen naar het buffet zagen gaan. We hebben uiteindelijk zelf moeten vragen wat er van drank in de prijs inbegrepen zat, want een koffietje zou uiteindelijk wel smaken :-) Blijkt dat het glaasje bubbels, het fruitsap en één koffie/thee inbegrepen was. De criticasters zullen zeggen dat je dit toch op het internet kan opzoeken, maar soms is een beetje persoonlijke aanpak fijner. Het buffet zelf was heel uitgebreid en zag er super uit. Het werd goed bijgevuld en zag er steeds verzorgd uit! Er was méér dan voldoende van alles (kaas, 3 soorten zalm, allerlei salades, fruitsla, rijstpap, koffiekoeken, broodjes, noem maar op..). Wat ik jammer vond is dat het personeel (2 dames voor een volledig volle zaal, 40 man schat ik), zeer afwezig was. Dit neemt niet weg dat beide dames zeer vriendelijk en behulpzaam waren. Voor 3 personen hebben we 98 euro betaald, voor de gewone brunch. Wat ik voor dat geld zeer zou appreciëren (en wat je tegenwoordig wel vaker zit bij dergelijke zaken), is gratis kraantjeswater. Dat zou het geheel van de ervaring helemaal àf maken. (Een kleine opmerking van het toilet. Als je als dame op het wc neerzit, is er een grote kier te zien tussen deur en omkadering. Als er dan mensen de inkomhal binnenkomen, voel je je niet echt meer op je gemak..)

Maar: een zeer goed verzorgd buffet met lekkere en gevarieerde gerechten. Een interieur dat top verzorgd is en er gewoonweg geweldig uitziet. En aangenaam en behulpzaam...

We came on Sunday at noon for their buffet. You have two time slots for the buffet the first from 9h15 am till 11h45 am and the second from 12 till 2h30pm. The buffet costs around 40 euros (Septembre 2024). The place is cozy and tidy. The food is good, there's a satisfactory variety offered in the buffet. However, the service is subpar, the employees are overwhlemed. Perhaps the place is understaffed on Sundays. No matter how much the idea of a 'posh' buffet in Gent is appealing, I found the whole experience to be a little bit underwhelming. It's a nice discovery in Gent in case you're a long term resident there, but not a must-try...
