Dok Koon is a lovely addition to the food scene in Ghent and has quickly established itself as one of the contenders for the best Thai restaurant in the city.
We came following a recommendation from a good friend and his wife. And when we visited, there's indeed a sprinkling of charm, with the restaurant being run by a mother-daughter duo.
Their food is described as "street food from the northeast of Thailand," where they were born, and it was good. We ordered Pad Thai (a must for every first visit in order to establish a comparative base) and Massaman curry.
The interior is rustic, with a lot of wood, and is based on the Thai countryside. We read somewhere that almost all the decoration in the restaurant comes from their home country, as does the tableware.
The only downside are the prices but it's not limited to Dok Koon. In recent times, Thai restaurants in the city have increased prices to eye-watering levels, and this might become prohibitive to some. It's now no longer uncommon to have curries (red, green, panang or massaman) starting from EUR 20, but of course there are drinks, desserts and starters to think about, too.
It could still a treat to visit for a quick and informal date night, or when I'm too...
Read moreThe food was good but only if you have time to wait. And a long one. Just launched 4 days ago, the restaurant could have a great future iiiiffff the staff and owner took the clock and customer more seriously. The restaurant had no customers almost we arrived, but still it took them more than 45 min to have the food ready (and please be minded that we are talking about fried food on a wok, nothing more). Also, that shouldn’t be the spirit of a rest that just opened: imagine when the rest gets “famous” and busy? 😳 also, it’s really annoying when the staff basically ignores that they should be attentive to the public. There is no point on being a water or waitress if you will be looking at the floor or being with your back on the direction of your customers. Eye contact...
Read moreBeautiful establishment, took me right back to my trip to Thailand. The staff were friendly and helpful, the waitress took her time to explain the dishes and to help out with the spice levels. The food was exquisite, especially the phat kaphrao and the tom yum soup were mouthwatering. I would highly recommend this restaurant if you want to experience delicious, homemade Thai food! All-in-all a great experience and guaranteed to...
