If the surroundings are a key component for you to enjoy your email then I can hardly think of a better place than House of Waffles to enjoy a meal outdoor overlooking a beautiful part of Ghent.
If like me you choose a place for the food, then I would not recommend this place.
The staff is very gentle. The waffle and camomile were served to me super quickly, which surprised me.
The waffle arrived cold. I raised that when paying but the answer I got is that the Bruxelles type gets cold quickly. Ok.. it was a sunny day and my camomile stayed hot a good while.
The waffle was so dry that while eating it I had a doubt whether it was even fresh. True, I have no real Belgian reference but one thing I know is there I didn't enjoy this one.
The cream was abundant but not particularly tasty. I think it would have benefitted from more sugar. Or eggs. Or vanilla. Anything to give it personality. As you can see from my picture I literally poured the whole cup on my waffle and it didn't help.
The chocolate was tasty but had a hint of something that I didn't particularly enjoy.
A shame because I initially took a seat thinking I was in a different restaurant. I even left to go to the other place. Then seeing the waffles from the other tables I decided to stay and give it a try as the food looked good and...
Read moreThe House of Waffles is a title we took rather seriously, hence we assumed that it would be the best place to have a waffle. The staff was nice, but nonechalant in their lack of effort to maintain some basic hygiene. We had to ask for our table to be cleaned of food leftovers from some guests before us, though the place was half empty when we got there. Even then, they don't seem to know you don't spray the sanitizer allover the table once you already brought the order. The waffles and the strawberries were ok, but the sauces were rather liquid and the caramel sauce was bitter due to burned instead of melted sugar. We told that to the staff but didn't get an impression they cared. The menu is a thick book with things and commercials which were supposed to be interesting and appealing, but personally, seeing US politicians like Obama and Trump as promoters, is a deal breaker for me. All in all, there's lots of room for improvement with the food as well as the staff. We tried the waffles of the same chain in Brugge and there it was a whole...
Read moreThey offer both sweet and savoury waffle options, with a choice between the denser Liege waffle or lighter Brussels waffle.
I visited on a weekday evening and chose to sit inside. Unfortunately the service was slightly underwhelming - I waited a while before being served despite the place not being very busy. The server could have been more attentive and welcoming.
I ordered the classico Brussels waffle which came with cream, vanilla ice cream and chocolate sauce. While it was tasty, I preferred the waffle I had from a nearby cafe. That said, I appreciated that the sauce and toppings were provided separately, allowing me to put as little or as much as I wanted on.
Both indoor and outdoor seating...
