From the very beginning, our stay was tainted by the absolute lack of communication on the part of the hotel management, and the very out-of-date, poorly composed website. We depended mainly on the website for the information we needed to settle our travel plans, along with some info gleaned from Belgium travel guides. We were surprised to find, upon arrival at Het Anker, that contrary to the website information, we would be charged E15 per day for parking, 'down the street'. That was our first of many surprises attendant to our brief one-night visit in mid-June 2023. The second was that the 'coffeemaker' in the room was nothing more than a 'hot pot' contraption to boil water in, and the 'coffee' was simply a few packets of some instant concoction. On top of that, there was no cream or sugar in the room, and my multiple requests to the front desk (BTW, there is no room phone, you must physically walk to the desk...) to provide some extra coffee and condiments went completely ignored. Based upon the website information available at the time we booked, there were no brewery tours being offered (likely no site update since Covid?), however, upon our arrival, we noticed that tours were in fact being offered, just none available during out stay! Of course now it appears at least that portion of the website has been updated. In general, the rooms are small, and there is no A/C. The restaurant is nothing special, and we were very surprised to find that the fries they served with our fish and chips were not true Belgian-style fries, they were simply the frozen variety commonly found in the U.S. and other countries! What a disappointment! I would have to say, unless you are truly desirous of a 'stay-at-an-old-Belgian-brewery' experience, and are willing to forego many of the standard creature comforts associated with a hotel in this price range, you can likely do far better in the...

During our holidays in Bruges, we drove 1 hour to visit the brewery, following a warm recommendation from friends who had visited it in the past. We arrived with great appetite, but what awaited us there turned out to be one of the most unpleasant surprises we’ve ever had.

As soon as we sat down, the waiter informed us that there is a rule stating that we can order a maximum of 4 items from the menu!!! And this regardless of how many people we are!! So, a group of 7 people would be limited to only 4 dishes. The explanation we were given is laughable – supposedly, because of the crowd, it is more convenient for the kitchen to serve up to 4 items per group!! Sorry, but there are much larger restaurants that can easily serve all groups without such rules.

It should also be noted that this rule was not written anywhere, neither on the restaurant’s website nor was it mentioned when we made the reservation. We have visited dozens of restaurants both in our country and abroad, and honestly, this is the first time we have ever encountered such a situation. We are aware of restaurants with a minimum consumption requirement, but a maximum consumption? That’s a first!!!

As a result, our mood was ruined, we ordered a few dishes but of course remained hungry, and eventually ended up at the McDonald’s across from the brewery to actually fill up!!

Therefore, 1 star as a lenient rating (I wish there was an option for 0), and a piece of advice to future visitors: only go to the brewery if your group has a maximum of 4 people – otherwise you will...

This visit changed my life

Outstanding Food, Exceptional Beer, and the Warmest Service We had dinner at Hey Anker in Mechelen and were absolutely thrilled: deliciously prepared dishes, authentic flavors, and an outstanding selection of beers. I went for the slow-cooked spareribs in a marinade based on Gouden Carolus Whisky Infused – incredibly tender and full of flavor – while my friend enjoyed the Flemish stew made with Gouden Carolus Classic, served with chicory salad, fries and homemade mayonnaise. We finished with a Dame Blanche dessert, perfectly paired with a Gouden Carolus Whisky Infused beer. We loved it so much that we came back the very next day for lunch! This time we had the toast of Gouden Carolus brewer’s bread with smoked salmon and herb cheese, and the goat cheese salad on raisin bread with fried bacon bits, nuts, apples and honey. A special thank you to our delightful waitress Eva, whose kindness, attentiveness, and warm smile made the experience even more memorable. Highly recommended for excellent food, outstanding beer, and impeccable hospitality.

The restaurant has that vibrant atmosphere and personnel is generally kind. The Flemish stew was... not one of the best I tasted: it was not bad by any means but the meat was a too dry. The meal was also served way too fast: as much as I don't appreciate waiting for ever, no wait at all doesn't convey a genuine feeling. The beer I had with that stew, however, was excellent: after all that's the main reason you come here for, right? Regarding dessert I ended up getting the single malt whiskey tiramisù (two previous dessert picks of mine were reported as not available, which is quite a bummer): I have to agree with previous reviews saying the single malt whiskey can't be tasted at all. Again, the dessert was good but if you want to market it that way, you need to make sure a subtle whiskey flavor can be tasted otherwise it feels like a rip off.

I had a great 3-night stay at Het Anker, enjoying both the hotel and restaurant. The rooms are well-appointed, impeccably clean, and creatively furnished with beer crate nightstands—a nice touch. Breakfast was sufficiently diverse, featuring fresh waffles, though vegans might find it challenging due to a lack of clear labeling. However, dinner presented excellent vegan alternatives. In general the restaurant is showcasing both great service and delicious food. Despite being on the higher end price-wise, the food and drinks are worth it, especially the recommended beers. Location also comes in handy as it’s just a short walk to the city center.
