Lexy’s is a gem. Look, I love fried fish, stewed chicken, grilled lobster, rice & beans, and plantains as much as the next guy… but we’d had our fill of the ultra-traditional Belizean fare and went on a hunt for something a little more refined.
We sat at a quiet table tucked in a beautiful hidden garden right off the main drag. Lexy made us feel so welcomed and appreciated, insisting that diners like us helped to make her dream of running a posh little wine bar on Caye Caulker into a reality. She (quite literally) opened her home to us and shared her story of forcing that “some day” aspiration into existence. We felt seen, valued, and genuinely taken care of while we were there… what more can you ask for out of food service?
We split a trio of tapas while we sipped our drinks and basked in the twinkle of string lights and good music surrounding us.
The feta & bell spread was tangy and cold, a nice departure from the warmer and heavier flavors we’ve had much of during our trip. The bread was toasted to the ideal crusty/soft ratio to serve as a perfect vessel for administering as much of the spread to our system as we could fit on each bite.
The gnocchi was pillowy and soft - somewhere between a dumpling and a mashed potato bite with a thin gelatinized sheen to encapsulate it. It was swimming in a decadent creamy cheese sauce with lightly sautéed slivers of sweet onions. We should have saved some of that bread to mop our plate, but the side of a fork sufficed.
The shrimp curry was perfectly balanced - spicy, sweet, salty, tangy, creamy - the works. The shrimp were cooked perfectly. The whole dish just popped with a bright zing that made us say “wow” aloud more than once.
Oh - and the chocolate ganache tart, encrusted in honey butter pecans. I mean, does that even need an explanation? If you’re thinking “that sounds amazing”, you’re half way there.
All in all, a lovely dining experience in Caye Caulker. Great atmosphere, great service, great food. It was a nice reminder that hospitality is everywhere in Belize - every little nook and cranny is occupied by someone with a dream of making people feel welcomed, fed, and taken care of. Lexy and her chef are certainly succeeding in that....
Read moreI wandered in looking for a glass of wine. What I found is absolutely delightful. The setting is lovely, nature driven, serene and clean. The Pinot Grigio I ordered was chilled and so delicious, and good wine is hard to come by on this island that we love so much. We left thinking we were off somewhere else for dinner BUT the menu and the service called us back. We just felt drawn. Menu items are designed for sharing. We asked (as I always do) what the staff faves are We were recommended to try the Dip Trio and Butter Chicken…so of course we did The dips!!!! Can I just say that if they wanted to package the red pepper and feta dip I would line up daily for that with their homemade pita. The hummus was creamy and really good. I normally am not a huge fan of tzatziki but theirs is so fresh and light that it is just yummy! Our butter chicken honestly was some of the best I have ever had and I have had it a fair amount. The flavors so rich and deep with just a teensy amount of heat to deepen that flavor. It came with both steamed veggies and pickled ones….ever tried a pickled strawberry??? You must! The best part of the whole place if you can believe it isn’t even the amazing food which is why you go right?! The service we got has been the best we have had! And let me say that we would not say we have even come close to bad service anywhere so to say this is the best should tell you how nice our evening was. So we ended up canceling our previous Valentines plan and are booking our evening witn them and a multi course event. We are thrilled they are here and wish them the most success! I just hope there is always an extra seat for me to sip some wine ❤️ Well done Wine Yard…cheers to a lifetime of...
Read moreThis is hands down the best food on the island, and you can 100% taste the pure love that it is made with. The menu is small and powerful, and changes regularly, making sure that it is always fresh, never boring, and every bite is bliss. The atmosphere is top notch as well - conveniently located in the center of everything, but set back enough to make it feel quiet and private, with the collection of live edge tables, plants and fairy lights making it really special. The owner served us herself, and is an absolute gem.
Recommendations: everything, haha! But the hummus is other worldly (her take on a Caribbean inspired version). It's truly the best hummus I've ever had. And the homemade bread it's served with is WOW. I'd recommend this in the trio, with the homemade pickles and feta dip. And the gnocchi is actually orgasmic. I also tried the French onion soup, bang bang noodles, arugula/goat cheese/blueberry salad, and every one was stellar. I cannot wait to visit again and put more of this food in my mouth.
